One item removes bleach-induced yellow stains from toilet seats quickly

Toilet seat stains can be difficult to remove, especially when they're caused by bleach. But one supermarket item can remove the stains in minutes, according to cleaning fans

Toilet seat stains are unsightly and can make even the cleanest of bathrooms look grubby. Removing toilet seat stains can be tricky because they're not always caused by makeup, urine and body oils.

Cleaning products such as bleach can actually cause toilet seats to turn yellow. Bleach can react with plastic toilet seats, causing a chemical reaction that gives them an unpleasant yellow tint.

The advice came to light when social media user Andie Sutton posted on the Facebook group, ' Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips', seeking advice for cleaning her yellow-stained toilet seat.

She believed the toilet seat had "yellow urine stains" but some Mrs Hinch fans responded to the post claiming they could be caused by bleach, reports the Express.

Alma Laing replied: "It might not be urine-if bleach is put into the toilet bowl and the lid is put down, it will turn the underside of the seat yellow."

Pauline Lloyd commented: "It's not always urine stains; bleach makes some plastics turn yellow."

Caroline Brown wrote: "We had the same when we moved in December, tried everything I could think of, and nothing worked. Ended up buying three new toilet seats to replace the yellow ones. Also, don't use bleach as it can turn some white toilet seats yellow."

The post was also flooded with solutions for removing the stains, but one of the most popular tips was to use a magic eraser, also known as a melamine sponge.

Sue Munro said: "Magic sponge works great."

Wendy Fowles and Jessie Jenkins also recommended the use of magic erasers.

Magic erasers are composed of melamine foam, which is filled with tiny abrasive particles that act like ultra-fine sandpaper to eliminate stains.

These sponges can be purchased from most supermarkets or online. B&M offers a pack of three Elbow Grease Magic Erasers for £1.49, which equals to 49p per sponge.

Flash Magic Eraser Extra Power Cleaner is priced at £3 for two at Sainsbury's.

Other suggestions for getting rid of the yellow stains included using Pink Stuff paste, tin foil, a cream cleaner, and mould and mildew spray.
