NIAMH KIRK: 2016 makeup could save us from the boring 'clean girl' beauty look

As beauty lovers relish in the nostalgia of early 2010's makeup, there is one era of makeup Mirror writer Niamh Kirk wishes would make a comeback - and it could be on the rise very soon

It was the year when Beyonce released her Lemonade album, Brangelia got divorced, we were all taking selfies on our iPhone 6s’ and Kim Kardashian was robbed in Paris. But all of that aside, 2016 arguably saw the most iconic beauty looks ever.

With searches for 2011, 2012 and 2013 makeup on the rise, beauty gurus are diving into the archives of the looks of the early 2010’s and reliving their youth.

'No-makeup' makeup was one of the most popular looks on the 2013 runways. Dewy foundation bases, natural flushes and thin eyebrows were all the rave. Now with the rise in the ‘clean girl aesthetic’ doing the rounds it’s no wonder 2013 looks are making a comeback.

My makeup is a fusion of 2016 and 2025, I line my lips and pencil my brows but they are much softer than in my teens. I enjoy full coverage foundation, but with a pale pop of blush on top. If I had the chance, I’d happily bring back the bright eyes and cut creases any day.

Gen Z and Millennials are searching for early 2010’s makeup for emotional ties to the era, back when life was easier, and the biggest issues we had were what painfully high heels we were going to wear to the club.

So if like me, you’ve been holding onto your Naked Palette, or still remember how to cut crease like it was yesterday, the return of this era is a reminder that beauty is always playful and can always come back, and I'm hoping 2016 makeup does soon.
