DVSA tells drivers 'pack four items' before December 21 - 'they're essential'

The Highway Code states that drivers should have this sorted before the set off on the road

Drivers have been told by The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) that they should be carrying four essential items in their vehicles as the seasons begin to change. And with autumn officially starting today (September 22) and winter just around the corner on December 21, now is the time to prepare.

Posting on social media platform X, the DVSA reminded drivers to keep their vehicles “emergency ready,” noting that “just a few essentials could prepare you for the unexpected.”

According to the agency, the four must-have items are:

  • A torch
  • Jump leads
  • Emergency food and water
  • A first aid kit

The DVSA also referred to The Highway Code, advising anyone driving in adverse weather conditions to take extra precautions. In addition to the four basics, people behind the wheel should consider packing extra supplies to stay safe during winter travel.

It writes: "In winter check the local weather forecast for warnings of icy or snowy weather. DO NOT drive in these conditions unless your journey is essential. If it is, take great care and allow more time for your journey."

It adds that if you get stuck due to bad weather, carrying other items in an "emergency kit" could make a difference. You should pack:

  • de-icer
  • ice scraper
  • torch
  • warm clothing
  • boots
  • first aid kit
  • jump leads
  • shovel
  • a warm drink and emergency food in case you get stuck or your vehicle breaks down

In addition, Rule 229 of The Highway Code states that drivers must carry out a few checks before setting off. These checks help ensure your safety and prevent potential issues from developing as you continue your journey.

It says that drivers:

  • must be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows
  • must ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible
  • need to make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly
  • should remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users
  • should check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted.

With that in mind, it might be a good idea to visit the shops, browse online or check what you already have at home or in the garage. Pack the essentials into a bag and store them safely in your car - just in case.
