'I’m an interior designer - here are 6 trends making your home ugly'
With home trends coming and going as fast as the wind, an interior designer with 14 years of experience, has shared six tips she recommends to mare sure your home doesn't look 'ugly'
As people are spending more time at home with remote working jobs, colder weather and trying to keep costs low, many are starting to look for ways to make their home more beautiful. Whether it's just adding a new paint colour to the walls, or making a huge change such as new flooring or tiles in the bathroom, there area lots of things to think about when you make a change.
With home trends coming and going as fast as the wind, an interior designer, who posts under the TikTok handle @mommatips101, has made a list of six trends that she claims need to be "left in the past" as they're making homes look "ugly".
The woman has 14 years of interior design experience and has said small changes can make a "huge difference" in the home. The first trend she said should be left behind is LED light up mirrors in bathrooms and they give "cheap hotel vibes".
The expert said these should instead be swapped for warm backlit mirrors to give a "luxurious feel" instead. The second tip is a cheaper solution to make your home feel bigger, which can be done by hanging curtain rails closer to the ceiling, instead of putting them above the window, which may be much lower.
The expert said the change can make your space immediately feel "more elegant". The third tip is another cheaper switch that would take just minutes to change.
In the bathroom, the expert recommends switching an "old crusty showerhead" in the bathroom with a filtered high pressure head that is better for your skin.
Another tip is to change "boring plastic blinds" for real fabric and wooden blinds. She added that if they're not fabric or wooden that you "shouldn't bother" having any at all.
People who are looking at changing their flooring should look in the direction of "sleek, light, wood tones" to help make the space feel bigger and more inviting, instead of having dark and glossy floors that are "hard to clean".
The sixth tip is more controversial, as she tells homeowners to remove windows from their bathrooms and use LED lights instead. She said: "Don't have outside lighting penetrating the bathroom. LEDs are far better with no mould build-up."
Commenters were quick to ask the expert about her comment and question if it was the best thing for a bathroom.
One person said: "Natural light is better we need vitamin D & to save money on light bill." Another added: "Everything was great till the deny of natural light in the bathroom."
The expert replied: "Small changes makes huge difference, no mould build-up."
Another user said: "The curtain tip is a must!" While a fourth said: "My curtains will always hang at windows height. Hanging them higher is ugly! No one is telling me how to style my own home."
The expert replied: "It’s cool not everyone will grow with the times, some need to stay right?"
Another commenter said: "I like them all except the last one is confusing! I love a bathroom window and for the purpose of letting out shower steam to prevent mould."
