Where to stream the first 3 Shrek movies for free this weekend ahead of franchise return

The films are set to be removed from Prime Video on Monday (February 17).

The Shrek films will be made available free to watch on a streaming service ahead of the release of the fifth flick.

Production is well underway on a new film in the Shrek franchise, with DreamWorks Animation earmarked a release date of December 23, 2026.

Original Shrek stars Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) are all returning for the much-anticipated sequel, which will be directed by Walt Dohrn.

The filmmaker previously worked as a writer and artist on the second and third instalments and was Head of Story on the fourth film.

Eager fans may have another year to wait for the new film, but fans will be able to watch the first three movies on BBC iPlayer.

Shrek, Shrek 2 and Shrek The Third will be released on BBC iPlayer on Sunday (February 16) for families and viewers to enjoy. The news comes as these films are set to be removed from Prime Video on Monday (February 17).

The first Shrek film released in 2001 and followed the ogre (Mike Myers) as he found his home in the swamp overrun by fairytale creatures that had been banished by Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow).

Shrek was a huge box office smash hit and went on to become the fourth highest-grossing film of 2001. Subsequently, the film franchise cemented DreamWorks Animation as one of the top animation studios, rivalling the popular Pixar.

The success of the first outing led to Shrek 2 releasing in 2004, Shrek The Third in 2007 and Shrek Forever After in 2010.

In addition, the character of Puss in Boots (played by Antonio Banderas) got two spin-off films, with Puss in Boots releasing in 2011 and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish coming out in 2022.

The fourth film in the series won't be available to watch on BBC iPlayer but will be available on Apple TV+. The films can be purchased on the same platform or from Sky Store, Microsoft Store.

Last month, Universal Pictures announced Shrek 5 and Minions 3 swapped their release dates. DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 5 will be pushed back from July 1, 2026 to December 23, 2026 while Illumination’s Minions 3 moves into that summer 2026 window from its planned June 30, 2027 date.

While the release date of December 2026 might seem far, far away, Shrek 5 will be released in time for the original film's 25th anniversary.
