Where to stream every Mean Girls film as fans celebrate October 3
Mean Girls fans everywhere are celebrating the iconic October 3 - here's where you can binge-watch the entire film franchise today.
Film fans everywhere are celebrating the annual Mean Girls Day this October 3.
The iconic day was inspired by a scene in the 2004 comedy classic, which starred Hollywood heavyweights Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Tina Fey. In a memorable segment, viewers learn that main character Cady (Lohan) has a crush on school heartthrob Aaron Samuels (played by Jonathan Bennett).
Cady then reveals one of her first encounters with Aaron, saying: "On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was." While we never hear Aaron asking the now-famous question, the scene shows Cady responding with "it's October 3rd".
The date has become a huge pop culture reference ever since, with Lohan even referencing it in her latest film, Freakier Friday. For those who are keen to join in the festivities and revisit the entire Mean Girls franchise, here's your guide on where to stream the films.
Mean Girls (2004)
The first and most iconic film in the series, Mean Girls is among Lohan's most beloved performances. Directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey, the chick flick dives into life at an American high school.
Main character Cady moves to public school after being home-schooled throughout her childhood in Africa. As she tries to integrate, however, Cady is faced with the brutal hierarchy embedded into teen life.
Her first misstep comes when she develops a crush on Aaron, who the school's queen bee Regina George (McAdams) has already claimed. From her first Halloween party to tackling school crushes, viewers follow the main character through relatable teenage experiences.
This seemingly simple story has had a lasting impact on the coming-of-age genre and still inspires memes over 20 years after its premiere.
Mean Girls is streaming now on Netflix and ITVX.
Mean Girls 2 (2011)
While the first film carved a space for itself in pop culture history, its 2011 sequel failed to impress. Mean Girls 2 sees Disney star Meaghan Martin as main character Jo Mitchell, an 18-year-old tomboy who frequently moves schools because of her father's job.
Like its predecessor, this follow-up comedy centres on Jo confronting a clique at her transfer school. Instead of McAdams, Maiara Walsh steps into the role of the Regina George-type bully, Mandi Weatherly.
Though it borrows from the original Mean Girls narrative, critics slammed this instalment as an oversimplified take on the first film's rich themes. It currently has a sour 29 per cent Rotten Tomatoes score from audiences, with the first Mean Girls boasting a more impressive 66 per cent rating.
Mean Girls 2 is streaming now on Paramount+.
Mean Girls (2024)
The most recent film in the franchise was released 20 years after the original. With Tina Fey once again serving as a screenwriter, this musical offers a fresh take on the original story of Cady Heron and Regina George.
However, the lead characters are played by Gen Z stars Reneé Rapp (as Regina) and Angourie Rice (in the role of Cady). This updated version also fills in some problematic gaps that its noughties predecessor left. For example, Cady moves from Kenya, instead of the generalised continent of Africa.
Although the musical hasn't reached the same pop culture significance as the first movie, it earned approval from long-term fans.
