Harry Potter fanfiction centred on Draco and Hermione lands historic six-figure film deal

A book based on a widely-read Draco and Hermione fanfiction has reportedly just been offered a six-figure movie deal - and it's left fanfiction readers excited for more

Harry Potter fans who secretly thought Draco and Hermione should be dating: brace yourselves. Movie studio Legendary has just bought the rights to a book based on the Internet’s most famous Harry Potter ‘Dramione’ fanfiction in a landmark seven-figure deal.

A source revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that the deal may have exceeded $3 (£2.2) million, while another suggested it may have one of the highest sums paid for a book’s movie rights (not accounting for inflation). But, regardless of the exact amount, it’s got the Internet buzzing.

The dark fantasy novel, ‘Alchemised’, penned by award-winning writer SenLinYu, follows the story of an alchemist Helena, who is trying to recollect her memories over a defeated Resistance movement she was once a part of in a war-torn fantasy land.

The writer told The Hollywood Reporter: “I’m honoured by Legendary’s incredible enthusiasm for the project and can’t wait to see the world of Paladia come to life.”

However, what’s gotten the Internet talking is the novel’s origins. While the two materials don't share an official connection, THR sources say the book originally began its life as 'Dramione' (a story with a Draco and Hermione pairing).

SenLinYu is also known for their A03 fanfiction ‘Manacled’, which saw Hermione and Draco romantically paired in a dark alternate vision of the Harry Potter universe. The A03 platform has over 8 million registered users and is widely frequented for its transformative fan works – which are often on the raunchier side.

‘Manacled’, which has since been pulled from the A03 platform, follows a bleak Handmaid's Tale-inspired vision of Harry Potter, in which witches are used as concubines to create the next generation of Voldemort’s army.

Of course, it’s not the first fanfiction to get the movie treatment. 50 Shades of Grey, which sold more than 150 million copies globally and which earned just under $570 million at the worldwide box office, originally started out as a humble Twilight fanfiction.

While some have been left somewhat conflicted over the idea of fanfiction being adapted to the screen, others have taken it as a win for fanfiction writers as whole. As another comment read: “Proof that fandoms really do changes the industry.”
