Steven Gerrard has returned as the bookies firm favourite to land the Rangers vacancy as the former Liverpool captain eyes a return to management and a possible return to Ibrox. Previously, it was former Burnley and Watford man Sean Dyche who looked set to become the new Rangers boss and succeed Russell Martin
Sean Dyche emerged as the new bookies favourite just a couple of days to take over at Rangers following Martin's dismissal earlier this week. The Gers are on the hunt for their sixth different manager in just four years after suffering one of their worst starts to a domestic season.
The former Burnley man has been out of a job since he was sacked as Everton boss back in January after less than two years at Goodison Park. However, the 54-year-old has drifted in price from 5/4 to 8/1 with bookies William Hill to secure his job outside of England but has stiff competition with Steven Gerrard also linked with a return to Ibrox.
The Liverpool legend has been out of a job since a torrid couple of years at Al-Ettifaq but enjoyed three years at the Glasgow club where he achieved a 65% win ratio and secured their first Scottish Premiership title since returning to the top flight. He left the club in November 2021 for Aston Villa but left the club in great condition that season which saw them finish runners-up in the Europa League.
Spokesperson Lee Phelps said: “We’ve seen an almighty shift in the market for the next Rangers manager overnight, with Steven Gerrard smashed in the betting – he’s now odds-on at 8/13 from 5/4 to return to the dugout for the William Hill Premiership giants.
“Former Ibrox man Kevin Muscat is the new second favourite in the betting at 11/2, while current Hearts boss Derek McInnes is next at 8/1.
“Sean Dyche has been the big drifter in the last 24 hours; he’s out to 8/1 to take the role having been as short as 6/4 yesterday.”
It was a turbulent 123 days for the former Saints boss, who was dismissed on Sunday after Rangers failed to secure a win at Falkirk, surrendering yet another lead when Henry Cartwright equalised following Bojan Miovski's opener. The former Scotland international defender, who signed a three-year contract with the Ibrox club in June, was sacked after managing just five wins in 17 matches. Martin had joined Rangers six months after being let go by Southampton and now leaves as the shortest-serving permanent manager in the club’s history.
Despite mounting pressure and increasing anger from fans, club officials had held off on making a change. However, a 1-1 draw with Falkirk proved to be the final straw. The aftermath saw chaotic scenes, with ultras surrounding the team bus and Martin requiring a police escort to safely exit the stadium. Some fans hurled abuse at the players as they boarded the bus, while others clashed with police as tempers flared.
