The world championship darts competition organised by the PDC had only ever been won by five players in 20 years, but has had new champions in each of the last two years in Michael Van Gerwen and Gary Anderson. Staged in front of a raucous beers-and-cheers crowd at Alexandra Palace, Phil Taylor has won it a record 14 times, with Dennis Priestley, John Part, Raymond van Barneveld and Adrian Lewis the other winners. Its current sponsors are William Hill.
