Robbie Williams reveals agony over abortion record label pressured pregnant Nicole Appleton into
Take That star Robbie Williams and All Saints singer Nicole Appleton were engaged in 1998 but split soon after and were pressured into having an abortion by controlling bosses
Robbie Williams has painfully relived the child he lost with Nicole Appleton as music bosses interfered with their relationship and forced an abortion upon the pair.
The 50-year-old former Take That singer has turned his life into a big screen biopic - with a CGI monkey playing him as he explained he felt he was "less evolved" than others during his dramatic life. The film, titled Better Man, does not shy away from the harder parts of his life - including his past romances.
Robbie and All Saints singer Nicole, 49, began dating in 1998 and even became engaged but split the following year. It was reported that Nicole endured an abortion following the collapse of the relationship - and Robbie has spoken out about the agony they experienced over the decision.
Insisting he had to include the life moment in his film, Robbie explained that he consulted and gained approval from Nicole over the heartbreaking scenes. And he has also blamed music industry bosses for forcing them into the decision - and the Millennium singer has expressed he didn't take a stand against the bosses.
Speaking to Hello! Robbie said: “The most difficult bit is watching Nicole and what we went through, because she was instructed to get rid of our baby. And with that bit of the film, I can go, ‘Hey, you did a wrong thing and that’s the reason you’re going under the bus.’ You know?
“But with Nic, I did the wrong thing. It wasn’t that bit, it wasn’t the abortion – I didn’t make her do that – but I was a f****** awful boyfriend, like really awful, and I was in the height of my addiction and alcoholism. And it breaks my heart every time I watch it, because she’s a complete angel and there’s still shame attached to who I was then.”
Prior to his relationship with Nicole, Robbie dating Spice Girls singer Mel C - and subsequently dated Spice Girls singer Geri Halliwell following the collapse of his engagement to the All Saints star. The Let Me Entertain You singer started dating American actress Ayda Field in 2006 after they met making a documentary about UFOs.
The couple went on to marry in Beverly Hills in August 2010 and the have welcomed four children together; daughters Theodora, 11, and Colette, six, and sons Charlton, 10, and Beau, four. Both Robbie and Ayda have proudly discussed their brood in the past.
Former Loose Women star Ayda told The Sunday Times she sometimes can't keep control over the energetic four, saying: "My kids fly economy whenever we fly. I turn left and they turn right. That's terrible. I mean, people will think I'm such a d***. There's no interest in raising brats. My kids will know [economy] is where they will sit in a plane until they can pay to put themselves in a different part of the plane."
