Loose Women star breaks silence on Kaye Adams bully allegations
Carol McGiffin has spoken out about Kaye Adams in light of the investigation the BBC have launched into her 'bullying' behaviour, defending her for being the 'epitome of professionalism'
A Loose Women star has spoken out in defence of her long-time friend Kaye Adams after the BBC presenter was suspended from her radio show amid a bullying investigation.
In October, it was reported that Kaye, 62, had been taken off air from her BBC Radio Scotland programme Mornings with Kaye Adams while the corporation conducted an internal inquiry into allegations made under its Call It Out scheme.
She last presented her show on October 6, and has not been on air since. It was claimed that the broadcaster had allegedly “shouted and screamed” at junior colleagues. She strongly denies these accusations.
While speaking to the Mail on Sunday earlier this month, Kaye described the ordeal as “the most distressing weeks of my professional life,” adding that BBC Scotland had “still not provided me with any details of the allegations which have been made against me”.
The veteran broadcaster, who earns around £155,000 a year for her three-hour phone-in show, said she has been “inundated with messages of support” since being suspended. “I thank them from the bottom of my heart,” she said.
Among those standing by her is Carol McGiffin, who has now publicly defended her friend of more than two decades. Writing in her Best magazine column, the outspoken TV personality insisted: “I've known Kaye Adams for around 25 years. I started working with her in 2000, and even when we weren't working together, we always stayed in contact.
“She is a friend and I know her very well. She is the epitome of professionalism and one of the best presenters I've ever worked with. So, imagine my shock to read that she has been suspended from her long-running morning radio show on BBC Scotland.”
Carol, 65, went on to say that while she’s seen plenty of television stars mistreat staff during her nearly 40-year career, Kaye has never behaved that way.
“It's true, some TV ‘stars’ can be pretty abominable,” she admitted. “I've seen plenty of them treat staff appallingly... but they're usually awful people to start with. I wish I could name names, but I can tell you Kaye is definitely not one of them.”
However, Carol acknowledged that her friend’s strong personality could sometimes rub people the wrong way. “She's fiercely intelligent and a pedantic, persistent perfectionist,” Carol wrote.
She added: “Also, she doesn’t like to be wrong, which she is sometimes, although she'd never admit it... Yes, she's annoying sometimes, but never a bully.”
Carol also revealed that despite the pair often clashing on topics like “ Donald Trump, Brexit, climate change [and] Russia v Ukraine,” they have never fallen out.
“Not even when, as anchor on Loose Women, if she was losing the argument in a debate (especially to me), she would always make sure she got the last word!” Carol joked.
The BBC has declined to comment on the specifics of the case. A spokesperson said: “We would not comment on any individual case. If any complaints or concerns are raised, we have robust internal processes in place to manage these.”
Kaye, who has been with BBC Scotland since 2010 and is also a Loose Women regular, said earlier this month that her name has been “dragged through the mud” but she is hopeful her reputation will be restored once the investigation concludes.
