Iconic Shameless actor looks completely unrecognisable 20 years after show began

The iconic Shameless star sports a very different appearance to how some fans would recognise him from the show which saw him rise to national fame

An iconic Shameless actor looks completely unrecognisable 20 years after the show first began.

David Threfall has had quite the acting career which has included playing the role of Frank Gallagher in the famous show. The now 72-year-old surprised fans when he attended a red carpet on Thursday this week as he went to the premiere of The Death of Bunny Munro at the Royal Festival Hall.

The star looked completely different as he turned up with a long grey beard along with a navy tweed blazer. The actor is starring as Bunny Munro Senior in the upcoming Sky Atlantic drama The Death of Bunny Munro.

David appears alongside other well-known names in the show such as Matt Smith and Rafael Mathé which comes to Sky on November 20.

The programme is made up of six episodes and is based on Nick Cave’s 2009 novel. It follows Matt Smith's character who is a door-to-door beauty product salesman who goes on a chaotic road trip with his young son after his wife dies.

A synopsis for the show says: "Following his wife Libby’s death by suicide, sex-addicted, door-to-door beauty product salesman and self-professed lothario Bunny Munro finds himself saddled with a young son and only a loose concept of parenting.

"Together with Bunny Junior he embarks on an epic and increasingly out-of-control road trip across southern England as the two struggle to contain their grief in very different ways."

David found fame on name through iconic British TV series Shameless, which ran for 11 series from 2004 to 2013. The drama also went on to inspire a hit US remake.

Frank, the head of the Gallagher family, was known for his dramatic outbursts and his drinking habits. However, the actor couldn't be further from his character.

David has had many different roles over the last few decades on screen and on stage as well. He has had major roles in Shakespeare plays and other theatre shows as he has taken on parts including Oedipus, Macbeth, and Don Quixote.

He has also been in several films such as Hot Fuzz, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Master and Commander and Alien Autopsy. 2016 saw David star as Abel Croker in Ripper Street.

Other projects that David has been involved with are Funny Woman, After Life, Troy, Dodger, and Code of a Killer, as well as films such as Nowhere Boy and Black Sea.

Away from his career, he is married to a Bosnian-British actress called Brana Bajic since 1995. The couple have two children together.

She has had a successful acting career herself as she has taken on parts in The Bill, Trial and Retribution and The Bletchley Circle.
