Strictly's Claudia Winkleman unrecognisable in young photo before fringe and tan

Strictly Come Dancing presenter Claudia Winkleman is known for her fierce fringe and love of a tanned glow, but her style has undergone a major overhaul since the 90s

Renowned for her razor-sharp humour, distinctive fringe and signature eyeliner, there's absolutely no confusing Claudia Winkleman.

Whilst others enjoy experimenting with different styles, the Strictly Come Dancing presenter knows precisely what suits her, and that's bare lips paired with generous amounts of artificial tan - and she looks absolutely stunning.

"When I'm orange, I feel better," Claudia - who has today announced that she's leaving Strictly, along with co-host Tess Daly - once said of her fondness for fake tan.

She picked up her passion for a bronzed look from her mother, journalist and editor Eve Pollard, previously explaining: "Like me, my mum loves an orange glow, so I remember her swirling huge brushes of orange over her face and thinking it was the most glamorous thing ever."

Regarding her beauty routine, Claudia is refreshingly down-to-earth, acknowledging she's used everything from mud to an eyeliner pencil to create a tan and admitting to the cardinal sin of sleeping with a complete face of makeup.

"I'm useless," she previously told The Mirror. "I go to bed with my make-up on - it makes me have better dreams. Then I wake up, do the school run, have a nap, then I'll shower and take my make-up off.

"With my hair, I don't even dry it. If I'm pushing the boat out I might brush my fringe."

Despite being amongst the BBC's highest-earning women, Claudia humbly reckons it's solely her iconic fringe that secures her numerous roles.

"I think it's the only reason I get work," she quipped. "I'm sure TV producers go, 'Who's the one with the fringe? We'll have her.'

"I can't imagine life without it. Even if it all falls out, I'll just get a fringe wig."

Regarding cosmetic procedures and Botox, the television personality has confessed to trying the latter previously but has since abandoned it for two key reasons.

Firstly - she wasn't keen on how it altered her appearance, and secondly - she realised her fringe concealed it regardless.

"I had a go at Botox and I looked weird. I'm not even going to show you what's under my fringe because then you'll be physically sick on me," the self-deprecating celebrity revealed to The Sun in 2016.

"I try and be honest about it. I tried it, didn't like it. I looked alarmed, and if there's anything that I am it's not alarmed.

"Damn, it's falling apart. I have a huge fringe and I wear enough eyeliner to kill a clown. I mean, a lot of people find it repellent, but I'm too old to start changing."

However, before Claudia perfected her signature look, she sported a more understated appearance with golden-toned locks, no fringe and minimal eye makeup.

A rediscovered photograph of the broadcaster from 1995 captures her grinning at the lens with her considerably lighter tresses styled in tousled waves with an untidy side parting, typical of that era.

Her complexion appears cosmetic-free whilst her skin displays more of a peachy glow. And Claudia - who shares children Jake, Matilda and Arthur with spouse Kris Thykier - previously revealed the reasoning behind her equally transformed image, describing it as 'armour' intended to 'desexualise' her. "If you've got a fringe and been spray-painted, you're winning... it totally desexualises you," she shared with the audience at the Cheltenham Literature Festival.

"I don't want to be sexually attractive, I don't want to be cute or sexy. I want to be Yves in Lyons. It helps with ageing.

"My face is falling off... I don't care. I love getting old but I will still be the orange one with the fringe."

She added: "I've got three pairs of the same black jeans, plain sweaters, a fringe, orange face, black eyes, white mouth like I've kissed a bottle of Tippex, and I'm good to go."
