- NFL. Mike Evans and Jalen McMillan out: Can Baker Mayfield lead depleted Buccaneers?
Baker Mayfield's challenge with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season is enormous. Injuries have left the team and the 30-year-old quarterback with very limited options on their way to the playoffs.
However, the QB is not giving up and has earned high praise from one of his teammates.
Baker is being compared to Tom Brady
Baker is currently one of the five strongest candidates for NFL Most Valuable Player. In eight games, he has thrown for 1,919 yards, 13 touchdowns, and two interceptions. In addition, his passer rating is approximately 98.1.
However, injuries have taken their toll on the team, and without the speed of Jalen McMillan (neck injury) or Mike Evans' ability to dominate contested receptions (broken collarbone), the Bucs' offense has been severely affected.
With Chris Godwin and Bucky Irving still recovering from a fibula and shoulder injury, respectively, Mayfield carries a heavy load on his shoulders. However, his teammate and linebacker Lavonte David has high praise for him, and his words are not to be taken lightly.
He was selected in the 2013 NFL draft with the 58th pick and throughout his career has shared the field with several quarterbacks, including seven-time champion Tom Brady.
Appearing on the podcast 'The Arena Gridiron', David recalled what TB12 was like and what sets him apart from his current 30-year-old teammate:
"Tom was a detail-oriented focus pinpoint guy. He's one of those OCD guys where everything has to be perfect. Bake, he just goes out there and has fun. When something's not done right, we go and talk to him and get it corrected. Bake is a locker room guy," Lavonte began.
However, there is something stronger that the legendary QB and the first pick in the 2018 Draft share and that unites them, which David highlighted:
The thing I really love about them both is the passion they have and the competitive nature they have. The same thing I saw with Tom I see with Baker, so I love to see that.
Given his vast experience and the opportunity to have played with both QBs, David's words not only highlight Mayfield's talent and contribution to the team, but also live up to the standards of a player who led the team to the Super Bowl.
Now Mayfield and the Buccaneers will face Brady's former team, the New England Patriots, looking to add another victory at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, November 9.
