Laboratory Services
Our Laboratory Services team delivers high-quality patient care and provides an extensive range of diagnostic testing for both patients who are hospitalized and those attending outpatient clinics at Mackenzie Health.
Laboratory tests are available without an appointment, but only for patients whose physicians hold privileges at Mackenzie Health. Please note that paper requisitions are no longer accepted.
Clinical chemistry: Specialized in many complex laboratory testing platforms to provide excellent patient care. Provides expert guidance to diabetes and lipid management, endocrine disorders and therapeutic drug monitoring.
Hematology: Specialized in detecting changes in blood cells in diseases such as anemia, leukemia and infection. This includes peripheral smear, bone marrows and body fluids. Performs coagulation testing to monitor anticoagulant therapy, and to detect bleeding and thrombotic disorders.
Transfusion medicine: Provide testing and compatibility blood and blood products for patients required transfusion. Perform specialized testing to support obstetric patients and trauma patients.
Anatomical pathology (Cytology and Histology): Responsible for preparing all surgical specimens and needle biopsy aspirates to assist Pathologist with diagnosis.
Specimen procurement and management: Skilled phlebotomist responsible for collection of specimen to support internal clinical programs.
Point of care testing: Diagnostic testing performed outside the laboratory and at the patient bedside allowing clinical partners to obtain faster and accurate results. Point of care testing is also performed at the following Community-Based Programs and Services:
- Chronic Kidney Disease Program (Richmond Hill)
- Chronic Kidney Disease Program (Vaughan) and Urgent Care Centre (UCC)
- Reactivation Care Centre (RCC)
Microbiology: On-site testing limited to rapid diagnostic and molecular microbiology testing, with full microbiology laboratory support provided by external laboratories.

Lab tests available without appointment for eligible patients
You do not need to make an appointment for laboratory tests. However, please note that we will only perform tests for patients whose physicians have privileges at Mackenzie Health and require bloodwork for outpatient clinics.
Orders for blood work must be placed into Mackenzie Health’s Electronic Patient Record System by a Mackenzie Health physician or nurse practitioner. Patients who arrive at the laboratory with a Ministry of Health requisition will be directed to a community laboratory.
The laboratory will notify patients when their home infusion blood products are ready for picked up. Patients must present government issued photo identification at time of pick up. If a designated individual is picking up the product on behalf of the patient, they must present:
- Government issued identification for the patient
- Their own government issued photo identification.

Choosing Wisely Canada and Canadian Blood Services designated Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital and Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital as Using Blood Wisely Hospitals.
Using Blood Wisely is a national initiative aimed at improving the use of blood and blood products in health care. It is a collaboration between the Canadian Blood Services and Choosing Wisely Canada.
The program focuses on ensuring that hospitals use blood transfusions cautiously, adhering to evidence-based guidelines, to enhance patient safety and reduce unnecessary transfusions. The Using Blood Wisely Hospital designation symbolizes a commitment to red blood cell stewardship and the continuous pursuit of quality improvement. In achieving this designation, Mackenzie Health is among a select group of hospitals that are making a difference for patients, donors and Canada’s blood supply.
Leading with innovation
The pathology department operates as a fully digital workstream, enabling more efficient patient diagnostic reporting timelines.
An in-house specimen tracking system ensures the integrity of pathology samples within and between hospital sites.
Core laboratory is fully automated track system at both laboratories with digital hematology.
If your appointment is at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital:
You may park in one of the visitors parking lots (North or South) and make your way to the C-Wing or D-Wing entrance.
Please allow yourself extra time during peak hours, as finding parking can take longer than expected. If possible, consider taking public transit, or getting dropped off by a family member or friend.
If your appointment is at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital:
You may park in the visitor parking lots at the west of the building.
Access to the hospital is through the Main Entrance at the south side of the building (6:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.) or through the west of the hospital (24/7 access). Drop-off and pick-up are available at both entrances.
