Munn Park’s first large Christmas tree, an artificial majestic mountain pine, was delivered this week.
The tree by the numbers:
- There are more than 25,000 lights on the tree.
- The tree has 88,402 branch tips.
- The star on top of the tree is 3.5 feet tall.
- From the bottom to the tip of the star, the tree is over 37 feet high.
- The tree with its decorations weighs 3,380 pounds.
Setup and decoration took 21 hours, split over two days.
Over the years, people have asked about adding a Christmas tree to the decorations in downtown, said Eric Michaels, marketing and events director at the Lakeland Downtown Development Authority (LDDA).
“This is my baby,” said Michaels. “I personally absolutely love Christmas decorations. They are my favorite part of the holiday season.” He researched, found a company that could install a tree and created a proposal. “I presented it to our board of directors and without batting an eye, they said, ‘Absolutely, yes. We want to give back to the community of Lakeland for everything that they’ve done for us.’”
The LDDA has planned several events around the tree throughout the holidays. At the Dec. 6 First Friday “Holiday Spectacular,” the LDDA will offer free, professional family photos from 6 to 9 p.m., Michaels said.
The tree will stay up through mid-January.
