The Sitemorse 'INDEX' audit is carried out by independent specialists Sitemorse and the website undergoes 1600 tests, checks and measures per page which identify actions that improve the user experience, looking at factors such as loading speed, links and accessibility.

Leader of North Devon Council, Cllr David Worden, says: "Our website is a crucial tool for us to provide our services in a way that meets our customers needs. Many people are simply not able to call us during working hours, whereas for others it isn't easy to make it into our officers, so our website is the way they access important information. This has been illustrated even further over the last few months with the coronavirus outbreak making it possible to continue providing our vital services 24/7 to help our customers get through the difficult time.

"Our aim for the website is to make sure that the online experience matches what people would get over the phone or face-to-face. I am delighted that all this hard work has been reflected in the audit and award to the council."

Executive Assistant at Sitemorse, Laura Shilstone, says: "Congratulations once again to North Devon for topping the Sitemorse Local Council INDEX. Their achievement is testament to their attitudes and putting online visitor experience to the top of their agenda. How do they stay in the top 10? Through incremental management and steady improvement, always scheduling regular times to assess the detail and having a "let's get on with it" attitude - essential to their success! North Devon really care, and it shows."

The website remains continually under review with improvements being made all the time. One of the council's priorities is to continue to provide better services for customers and this includes making more services quick and simple to access from the website.

  • Better Connected Awards 2017 Best Council category - Search, Navigation & A-Z

    SOCITM

"Best for search, navigation and A-Z

This is an ‘all council’ category so again the intention was to give five awards. Councils in our winning group not only scored four stars and were recommended by reviewers, they also scored maximum or close to for the other criteria. Sites were also consistently good across all channels. In fact there were six of them that tie at the top. The winners were: Mole Valley DC, North Devon Counci, Falkirk, Torbay, Herefordshire, Windsor & Maidenhead"

  • #1 Sitemorse Index

    Sitemorse

"Sitemorse is very pleased to be able to confirm that North Devon Council has achieved the number 1 position in its most recent Quarterly INDEX of all local Councils in the UK – 408 in total.

This is an amazing achievement and it is equally satisfying that the overall score is 9.2 out of a possible 10.

With so many outside influences on websites these days with links to external websites and associated sites it is becoming harder to maintain control of your own destiny.

The work that Steve and his colleagues have had to do to get to this level of excellence is not an easy task.

I would like to note that Steve has previously managed to get the North Devon Website to the top position some years ago.

The important factor is this, the higher the score – the better your website performs for your visitors. This is what Steve have always strived to achieve."

  • SOCITM Better Connected "Best District Council" 2016

    Society of Information Technology Managers

Headline results from individual tasks and tests are set out on the individual results pages for each council and in the ‘all council’ reports. Detailed scores are available to Socitm subscribing organisations that are logged in.

These scores are the basis for awarding Better connected ‘stars’ – four stars denoting a very good user experience, three a good one, two unsatisfactory and one a poor experience.

Stars are awarded for each task tested, for the navigation/search/A to Z experience, and for the experience from a mobile device.

Scores are then aggregated into a star ranking for each website. To get a four star site ranking, a site must achieve 12 out of a possible 16 ‘task stars’, get 3 or 4 stars for the navigation/search/A to Z and mobile experiences, and pass the accessibility test (ie score 2 or 3 where the range is 0-3).
