It was a real honor to speak at The NAI's 25th Anniversary Summit in San Francisco alongside Leigh Freund, Daniel Jaye and Dave Zinman. What started as a conversation about privacy and compliance quickly turned into a powerful reflection on the new economics of trust, data and the fast-emerging reality that privacy is, in fact, a competitive advantage. For much of digital advertising’s still short history, privacy has been viewed as a regulatory checkbox—a burden to manage, not a lever to pull. But that mindset is changing fast. Today, smart companies are realizing that responsible data practices aren’t just good ethics—they’re good strategy. With signal loss accelerating and consumer scrutiny rising, high-quality data is getting harder to find. Consumer data is the new gold. It’s more valuable than ever. In my latest blog, I walk through the three major phases of privacy motivation in digital advertising, from fear of regulation to the pursuit of a competitive edge. Most retail media networks don’t add incremental value. Michael Shields, with whom I had the pleasure to have dinner at Andy Plesser´s #BeetBerks event, said it well in his latest piece: Too many RMNs are too small to justify their place on a media plan, and even when they do, it's far from clear that retail media spend growth drives retail sales growth. We agree.    The big opportunity for retail media isn’t just to monetize existing shopper attention. It’s to anticipate shopper intent.    That requires more than ad slots on a single retailer's site. It requires:  ·       A relationship with the advertiser, so you understand brand goals.  ·       A relationship with the merchant, so you can unlock the right inventory.  ·       A relationship with consumers to understand their behavior across retailers, purchases, categories, and moments in time.    This is what makes PayPal Ads so unique.    We sit across tens of millions of merchants and 400M+ consumers, with visibility into over 1 billion shopping moments each month.     Not just clicks. Transactions.  Not just on one site. Across the internet. That allows us to help advertisers predict demand and help merchants participate in it. That means better performance for the advertiser and value for the merchant, not one at the expense of the other. Mastercard launches Commerce Media Network for targeted advertising With the launch, Mastercard joins a growing number of other payment platforms offering commerce media opportunities, including Chase Bank, Klarna and PayPal. As agentic commerce advances, Mastercard is partnering with Microsoft with the aim of enabling Mastercard Commerce Media in Copilot Studio to provide a connected experience whether a human or an AI agent is driving it. In May 2025 Mastercard debuted Agent Pay, a tokenized payment technology that can be integrated into agentic AI platforms to facilitate secure payments. Molly Hjelm, the new head of RedVest Media (Ace Hardware Corporation's retail media network), is building with a different philosophy: retail media should solve merchant problems, not create them.
