Last week, the Office of Management and Budget's Agenda was updated to show that the HIPAA Security Rule Update has been pushed out to July 2027. This shift was due in large part to the number of comments received and the concerns related to the financial and operational burden regional healthcare providers would face. Will the update ever be released? It has been 13 years since any sort of meaningful update was made to the Security Rule. In that time we have seen extreme technological progress coupled with an increase in cyberattacks (especially ransomware in the healthcare space). It seems inevitable that a HIPAA Security Rule Update will come, otherwise the effectiveness of the regulation will wane. We have seen recent examples where HHS has committed to improving the safety and availability of patient data (e.g. the upcoming August 2026 Privacy Rule Update), and the HIPAA Security Rule Update would be in line with that directive. What should your organization do? Just like delayed flights, it does not mean that the timing can't be shifted closer to the original time (or pushed out further in many cases). I would advise against viewing this as an opportunity to kick the can down the road for a year unless your organization has already performed a review, internally or with a third-party assessor, of the proposed updates and determined that you are in compliance or can become compliant within the rollout period if it were to occur tomorrow. We kicked things off with management meetings, followed by a night of celebrations including a 20-year anniversary, our 10-year Rolex ceremony, and the bittersweet retirement of a few very important jerseys. The next day, we took it to the pool for games… some we won and some we definitely lost 😄 before wrapping up with our Day of Giving supporting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Lately, there’s been a lot of noise in the market around SOC audits, and I’ve had quite a few people reach out asking what this all means. I think its the perfect moment to pause and remind ourselves what this work is actually about. At Schellman, we’ve always been tool agnostic. We don’t rely on leads from GRC vendors, and we don’t depend on any one platform. Our clients use a wide range of tools…some still use spreadsheets. That’s not what defines the quality of an audit. What matters is the rigor behind it. Every SOC report we issue goes through a deep review process. We challenge our clients, we dig in, we document, we validate, and we stand behind our opinions. Because at the end of the day, this profession is about trust, and as CPAs, we own that responsibility. Also, it seems that many people have forgotten what these reports were actually designed to do. They exist to give your customers confidence and trust in your systems and your ecosystem. When we start treating them like a check the box exercise, we dilute that purpose. We’ve seen that happen, and this is a chance to reset that mentality. If integrity matters, trust follows. And if trust matters to you, lean in when you’re choosing your auditor. Don’t default to the easiest path just to get something done. Choose to do it the right way. Because doing it right takes time, effort, and yes… it’s not always the cheapest option. It starts with asking better questions. Ask how they think, how they challenge, what their experience and technical depth really look like, how much of their work is truly focused on cyber and privacy, and the technical acumen of the team that will actually be on your engagement. Because at the end of the day, you are NOT buying a report. You’re doing the work all year, and you’re choosing who has the independence, technical depth, and professional skepticism to challenge it, opine on it, and stand behind it when it matters.

The experience was a great reminder of the scale, complexity, and precision required to deliver for our customers, as well as the dedication of the UPSers who make it happen. Seeing the operation firsthand reinforced how interconnected our functions are and the importance of strong partnership across the business. As an Internal Audit leader, the experience provided valuable context that will help me better understand operational realities, identify risks more effectively, and partner with the business to drive continuous improvement and stronger outcomes.
