Westchester County is partnering with hospitals and health systems Countywide for Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Westchester County Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler said March is a time to raise awareness about colorectal cancer, the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, and to get checked if you are over 40 or earlier, depending on family and personal history. Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “Colorectal cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men under 50 and the second leading cause of cancer death in women under 50. Each year, more young men and women in their 30s and 40s are diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Screening saves lives.” Amler said: “If you are in your forties, it’s time to discuss your family history, identify your risk factors and learn ways to reduce risks through lifestyle changes and regular screening. For most of us, screening should start at age 45, but if your parent or sibling was diagnosed with polyps or colorectal cancer, screening should begin even earlier.” In addition to regular colonoscopies, the Health Department emphasizes that over half of all colorectal cancers are linked to lifestyle factors, including physical inactivity, poor nutrition, excess body weight, and tobacco and alcohol use. Protect your health by maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and incorporating more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains into your diet. Steer clear of tobacco, and try to limit or avoid red and processed meats, sugary drinks, refined grains, and alcohol. In the wake of two hospital closures in Massachusetts—facilities previously run by the now-bankrupt Steward Health Care—communities are facing strains on their emergency medical services and access to health care. Strains like this tend to “worsen your underlying chronic diseases if you delay access to care, whether the delay is because you have to switch to a new doctor or travel longer,” said Jose Figueroa, associate professor of health policy and management. “It impairs your ability to ensure you’re on the right medications. It impairs your ability to get testing that might dictate whether your treatment regimen should be changed.”

🚨 Attention NHTD & TBI Providers in NYS: Starting July 1, 2025, new billing requirements take effect for all services under these waiver programs. 🔹 Claims must now use county-based Locator Codes tied to the recipient’s location, not the provider’s—critical for telehealth. 🔹 Rate Code 9795 is being retired for NHTD HCSS services; providers must use regional rate codes based on 5 defined regions. 🔹 Claims for services before July 1 should continue under the current process. 🔹 A DOH FAQ document is now available—review it closely to avoid billing errors. Make sure your billing team is updated. These are not optional changes.

It was an honor to speak at the NYSHFA Administrator Leadership Course on March 13th, sharing practical insights into the Capital Component of New York State’s Nursing Home Medicaid Rate. I leave the detailed reimbursement stuff to my CPA, Audit and Revenue Cycle expert friends! With over 35 years in the long-term care industry, I've seen firsthand how critical strategic investments in capital equipment are to the financial and operational health of nursing homes. During my talk, we explored: 1.     The direct practical impact of the Capital Component on daily Medicaid rates. 2.     How administrators can evaluate the financial benefits of renting vs. purchasing equipment. 3.     The essential nature of ongoing investment in capital equipment, especially during challenging financial climates. With the majority of critical access hospitals in New Hampshire's North Country closing their inpatient labor and delivery units in the last 20 years, we sought assistance to fill the gaps in maternal care. Now into its second year, our Rural Maternity and Obstetrics Management Strategies (RMOMS) grant has made significant strides in its mission to improve outcomes for pregnant and parenting mothers in the region. Dartmouth Health received a four-year grant from RMOMS in 2023 to fund the North Country Maternity Network, a consortium of hospitals, community-based services and state agency partners to create and support the maternal health infrastructure in northern New Hampshire. Resources made possible by the grant include a doula/community health worker program, supplementary training for obstetric nurses who work at rural critical access hospitals, and enhanced coordination between providers at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics and a consortium of local providers in the North Country, one of the most rural areas of New England. “In our first 18 months of the project, we’ve made incredible strides toward improving health outcomes for women and their children in one of the most rural parts of the state." said Daisy J. Goodman, DNP, MPH, a certified nurse-midwife at DHMC. "This is going to be a big year for us, and I’m so proud of the commitment and collaboration of NCMN and Dartmouth Health to improvement of rural health equity.”
