Erin Mettille shared thisLast night was one of those evenings that reminds you why Phoenix is different. The Phoenix Community Alliance, together with EPAM Systems, hand-selected a room full of Arizona's most forward-thinking leaders for an "Engineering the Future" event at the Herberger Theater Center — and that venue alone set the tone. There is something about standing on that stage that makes you feel like what you're doing actually matters. The incredible Panch (Sethuraman Panchanathan), former Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) — the agency that helped fund over 270 Nobel laureates — walked into that room and said plainly what we already feel: Phoenix is one of the most uniquely positioned innovation ecosystems on the planet. The energy he brought was electric, and hearing it validated at that level was something else. The panel that followed matched every bit of it. EPAM's Macy Donaway set the table perfectly, drawing a sharp line between companies that bolt AI onto what they already do and organizations that are truly rethinking how they operate from the ground up. Then Paul Rivers from the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury, Bianca Lochner, Ph.D. as CIO of the City of Scottsdale, and Kimberly C. as Deputy CIO of Arizona State University each brought honesty, vision, and real-world proof that this city is executing — not just talking. And that's exactly what made the night land the way it did. EPAM — with over 50,000 experts across 30 countries — didn't just show up to Phoenix. They chose Phoenix. As a focus for their North American expansion, they made it clear they are looking for partners who don't just talk about the work. They deliver it. Full stop. There is a rare kind of momentum building in downtown Phoenix right now. The ingredients are here. The leaders are here. And the right partners are starting to show up. Erin Mettille shared thisAs I shared back in May, we took a leap, said goodbye to our jobs and colleagues, and embarked on a new adventure that started in Spain. This summer was truly extraordinary, as we explored nine countries and capped it off by RVing through the breathtaking landscapes of Scotland. We made it back just in time for the kids to start school. While we’re now navigating school breaks, the adventure continues! This pause has been such a gift, allowing me to focus on things I’ve long dreamed of but never had the time for—volunteering, diving into my ever-growing reading list, playing tennis (and celebrating my first-ever tournament win with an amazing friend!), immersing myself in yoga, wellness, and health, and taking classes on topics I’ve always wanted to explore. What’s next? We’re gearing up for the ski season, more international travel (Canada and Costa Rica up next), and celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary, all while cherishing this time of fun and family time. I also want to take this moment to express my heartfelt gratitude. To those who’ve reached out via InMail or email, I apologize if I haven’t responded yet, but please know your messages mean the world to me. Over the past decade, I've had the privilege of cherishing countless remarkable moments, forming meaningful connections, and spearheading impactful projects during my tenure with Slalom. However, it's now time for a new chapter to unfold. My family and I are heading out on an exciting adventure, trading in our laptops for backpacks as we embark on a journey to explore cherished destinations and discover new ones, nurturing our adventurous spirits along the way. I'm thrilled to share this incredible experience with my wonderful husband, Shane Mettille, and children, as we create lasting memories together. I'm truly saddened by the passing of my friend and mentor Gerard McCarty, and with the 25th anniversary of 9/11 right upon us, this hits home in a so many ways. Before there was a NYC OEM, there was Jerry, the grandfather of NYC emergency management, the person who who had the vision, the tenacity, the passion, the dedication and the courage to truly think big and to create and form something so meaningful and impactful to not only the residents of NYC, but the contribution to the field of emergency management as we know it today. My fondest recollections as a "twenty-something" at the NYC Mayor's Office of Operations, riding "shot-gun" while we responded to emergencies throughout the City, I learned so much from Jerry both as a person and a visionary. Last year, Jerry wanted to give more of himself, even through his illness, by volunteering with me for the First Responders Children's Foundation. That was the type of person he was. In the months's leading up to his passing, we spoke every week about so many things, including reminiscing about our time together, when all things were possible. My last conversation with him was filled with the typical Irish sarcasm he always infused into our interactions (those who knew Jerry know). Erin Mettille reacted on thisErin Mettille reacted on thisTwo years ago, I made the decision to leave a long career in insurance to bet on something that filled my cup: interior design. I spent 21 years at UHC before I made the leap, and it wasn't a small one. But in 2024, I walked away from the corporate world to build C.C. Burling Design — and I haven't looked back since. Here's what surprised me most: my corporate background didn't get left behind. It became the foundation. Design isn't just about beautiful things — it's logistics, timelines, budgets, and a hundred small decisions executed correctly and on schedule. My years at UHC gave me that discipline. My love for everything home-related gave me the passion. Together, it's turned out to be a pretty good mix. That combination now shows up in full home remodels, whole-home furnishings, and styling for families across Phoenix, Paradise Valley, Biltmore, and Flagstaff. We've opened up kitchens that changed how families actually live in their homes, and turned second homes into spaces that feel just as good on a family weekend as they do welcoming a first-time guest. None of this happens without my friends and family, who've been cheering me on since day one. And lucky for me, I still get to talk about employee benefits with @Kylekniepman!
