For too long, we public affairs professionals have gotten away with just telling our clients, both internal and otherwise, what they already know.
We talk about the regulatory landscape changing, the company’s reputation being at risk or the company's messaging needing refinement. We send across a "Strategic Policy & Communications Roadmap" and we think our job is done.
Those days are over.
When AI can scan every legislative transcript, news cycle, and social signal in seconds, all the monitoring and reporting are just table stakes. When a machine can draft a press release or policy brief instantly, content is no longer the value - it’s just the starting point.
Our work products cannot just be more reports, memos and slide decks.
We have to deliver outcomes.
Our work must move the needle, not just paper:
💪 💪 💪 Outcome over Output: We shouldn’t be counting the number of meetings we’ve had nor the number of words we have written. We should be counting the bills passed, the crises averted, and the markets launched. Public affairs must be measured by business impact.
💻 🙍 🙍♀️ AI-Augmented, Human-Driven: We must use AI to crush the research and landscape analysis in hours, thereby freeing us with more time to do the hard part. The hard part being the high-stakes negotiations, the backroom conversations, the creative storytelling… basically things that actually change minds.
🗣️ 🗣️ 🗣️ The "Last Mile" of Influence: Anyone can write a policy paper and a press release. Hell, AI can write them faster, and sometimes better. But, AI still can’t quite give us the local insights to navigate the human egos and political frictions required to get our point-of-views adopted. That “last mile” where we look someone in the eyes and win them over is where we humans still have a role to play.
🥇 🏆 🎯 Radical Accountability: We can’t hide behind vague, fluffy ideas like long-term brand building or thought leadership. Instead, we should set and achieve concrete, objectively-measurable targets with clear timelines for our public policy and communications campaigns.
What must change?
For Clients: There are a lot of people who can give you advice, but very few who can also execute and adapt as your operating environment shifts. Look for people who not just talk a good talk, they must walk the walk. Better yet, run!
For fellow public affairs pros: It’s time we transform ideas into actions which lead to real outcomes. It’s time we move beyond vanity metrics which do nothing to deliver any meaningful outcomes for our clients. It’s time we stop thinking of ourselves as support functions, account executives or consultants.
Instead, we are the Orchestrators, Persuaders and most importantly, Doers.
