Ramesh Padmanabhaiah posted thisA few months ago, I became the fastest developer on my team. Not because I was the most experienced or the smartest, but because I had fully embraced AI while others hadn’t. I was shipping at a pace the team had never seen. But something quietly started breaking. My teammates didn’t know what to make of it, and tension began to creep in. There was no shared understanding of what was happening, and no playbook for how to respond. Here is what I now believe: AI is not just changing how we write code. It is resetting team dynamics. It can push teams back into the storming phase, even after they have reached performing. When one developer goes deep on AI and others do not, you do not just get a productivity boost. You get velocity inequality. Velocity inequality creates confusion, resentment, and quiet conflict. In other words, it recreates the conditions of storming. And this is where the model is very clear. The storming phase requires the highest level of manager involvement. Without it, teams do not self-correct. They fragment. That is why this is not really a developer problem. It is a leadership problem. AI adoption now touches team structure, team health, and team strategy. That makes it a first-line manager responsibility. The early adopters are not problems to manage. They are signals to act on. If your team feels off right now, it is worth asking a simple question. Is this really a people problem, or is it an AI strategy problem wearing a people costume? I’ve spent 35 years thinking the opposite. Consider what happens when you drive from point A to point B. Traffic lights are timed. Roads are maintained. Highway speeds are monitored. Google Maps is responding in real time. Electricity is flowing to every signal on your route. None of that is visible to you. All of it is operations. Miss any single piece and your journey stops. We’ve built an industry that celebrates the people writing the apps while taking for granted the people keeping everything underneath them alive. I've watched brilliant engineers get labeled "not relevant" for caring too much about operational excellence. Cultures that reward shipping any code over keeping systems trustworthy and teams sane cost organizations more than anyone measures. Operations is not a burden. It is the foundation everything else stands on. The question is not whether to do it. The question is whether you do it intelligently. Automation that doesn’t understand operations is inhuman. The only thing that you can do to your child is to give him love and support. Create a loving atmosphere for him where intelligence will naturally flower. Your child need not do what you did in life. Your child should do something that you did not even have the courage to think about. Only then will this world progress and something happen. A basic responsibility that humanity has to fulfil is to ensure that the next generation of human beings is at least one step ahead of you and me. It is extremely important that the next generation should live a little more joyfully, with less fear, less prejudice, less entanglement, less hatred, less misery. We must aim for this. Attention Residue (and 3 strategies to fight back): The concept of "attention residue" was first identified by University of Washington business professor Dr. Sophie Leroy in 2009. The idea is quite simple: There is a cognitive cost to shifting your attention from one task to another. When our attention is shifted, there is a "residue" that remains in the brain and impairs our cognitive performance on the new task. Put differently, you may think your attention has fully shifted to the next task, but your brain has a lag—it thinks otherwise! It's relatively easy to find examples of this effect in your own life: • You get on a call but are still thinking about the prior call. • An email pops up during meeting and derails your focus. • You check your phone during a lecture and can't refocus afterwards. There are two key points worth noting here: 1. The research indicates it doesn't seem to matter whether the task switch is "macro" (i.e. moving from one major task to the next) or "micro" (i.e. pausing one major task for a quick check on some minor task). 2. The challenge is even more pronounced in a remote/hybrid world, where we're free to roam the internet, have our chat apps open, and check our phones all while appearing to be focused in a Zoom meeting. With apologies to any self-proclaimed proficient multitaskers, the research is very clear: Every single time you call upon your brain to move away from one task and toward another, you are hurting its performance—your work quality and efficiency suffer. Author Cal Newport puts it well: "If, like most, you rarely go more than 10–15 minutes without a just check, you have effectively put yourself in a persistent state of self-imposed cognitive handicap." Here are three strategies to manage attention residue and fight back: 1. Focus Work Blocks: Block time on your calendar for sprints of focused energy. Set a timer for a 45-90 minute window, close everything except the task at hand, and focus on one thing. It works wonders. 2. Take a Breather: Whenever possible, create open windows of 5-15 minutes between higher value tasks. Schedule 25-minute calls. Block those windows on your calendar. During them, take a walk or close your eyes and breathe. 3. Batch Processing: You still have to reply to messages and emails. Pick a few windows during the day when you will deeply focus on the task of processing and replying to these. Your response quality will go up from this batching, and they won't bleed into the rest of your day. Attention residue is a silent killer of your work quality and efficiency. Understanding it—and taking the steps to fight back—will have an immediate positive impact on your work and life.
