The latest UN Environment Programme #EmissionsGap Report 2025 finds that global emissions continue to rise, and despite some incremental progress in climate pledges over the last decade, ambition and implementation remain far short of what is required to limit warming to the Paris Agreement targets. WMO’s own most recent Greenhouse Gas Bulletin also reported that carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels in the atmosphere soared by a record amount to new highs in 2024. 🔥 What this means: At the current pace, we are heading toward 2.8°C of warming by the end of the century. The world will very likely exceed 1.5°C within the next decade, but preventing it from exceeding 1.5°C before the end of this century - “is still within reach”, says United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. 💧 The latest #StateOfWater report highlighted that 2024 was the 6th year in a row showing an erratic hydrological cycle. As water extremes intensify, advancing hydrology means advancing resilience. As the United Nations' specialized agency for operational hydrology, WMO helps countries strengthen their hydrological capabilities - from real-time monitoring and forecasting to warnings and water resources management. 📊 These efforts support societies in reducing disaster risk and building a more sustainable, water-secure future. 🥇 At the 2025 International Hydrology Prize ceremony, held during the XIIth IAHS Scientific Assembly, WMO, IAHS - International Association of Hydrological Sciences, and UNESCO celebrated scientists whose groundbreaking work continues to shape the future of hydrology. 🔗 https://bit.ly/4oVeDDD

Sometimes the path to meteorology can begin in the most unexpected ways. One of our latest bulletins features Carlos Fuller, whose remarkable journey shaped Caribbean weather services. “I do not recall ever thinking about weather and climate during my childhood and teenage years. However, my Sixth Form mathematics teacher who happened to be the country’s Chief Meteorologist offered me a position as a weather observer upon graduation. This was the start of my career in meteorology which lasted 34 years.” Read his inspiring journey here: https://bit.ly/41dX1cF Cover credit: Eric King Collection

❄️ Historic Moment – Tajikistan donates an ice core to the Ice Memory Heritage to be preserved in Antarctica. 🇹🇯 Tajikistan hands over a deep ice core from the Pamir Mountains to the international scientific community of today and tomorrow. After a breathtaking 3-week expedition at 5,814 meters above sea level, the international PAMIR Project team successfully extracted the first two deep ice cores ever retrieved from this high-altitude region, marking a historic milestone for cryospheric research. 📍Back in Dushanbe, in a symbolic and moving handover ceremony on October 13, the Republic of Tajikistan officially donated these two precious ice cores, through the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan - echoing the spirit of international cooperation of the United Nations Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences. #DecadeOfCryosphere 🧊 One for analysis by the PAMIR international research consortium. 🧊 The other for long-term preservation in the Ice Memory Sanctuary in Antarctica, where it will be kept at –50°C for centuries to come. These 105-meter-long ice cores may contain at least 700 years of climate and environmental memory, offering future generations a time capsule of Earth's atmosphere, snowfall, dust, and temperature data. By entrusting this ice to science, Tajikistan is maintaining strong leadership in this decade, paving the way for international efforts to preserve threatened climate archives before they disappear due to global warming. 🌍 The Ice Memory Foundation now safeguards this 10th heritage ice core in #Antarctica – a gesture echoing the spirit of the United Nations Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences. 🎥 Watch the video of the handover ceremony 👇 🔗 Press release here: https://lnkd.in/ebSj-vRt 🙏 A very special acknowledgment to H.E. 🛰️ WMO congratulates the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) on the successful release of the first set of images from the FY-3H meteorological satellite, marking another major milestone in advancing the global Earth observation system! The launch and initial data from FY-3H demonstrate CMA’s strong commitment to enhancing meteorological satellite capabilities and contributing to the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS). Additionally, according to Natalia Donoho, PMP®, Chief of WMO Space Systems and Utilization, the "FY-3H data will significantly strengthen early warning and climate monitoring capabilities, particularly across the Asia-Oceania region and beyond. This highlights the importance of international cooperation and capacity development in satellite meteorology". 🔗 Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/dZJpbWgq 📸 True-color image of the Antarctic captured by FY-3H, CMA.

WMO is excited to introduce the Weather, Climate and Water Intelligence Commons (“WMO Commons”)! It was introduced at an Investors Forum, which took place 27 - 28 October, bringing together the public and private sectors, development and private banks, philanthropists and humanitarian agencies. It will be formally launched in 2026. "Today, climate extremes are accelerating faster than our capacity to manage them. In 2024 alone, global weather-related losses reached 318 billion dollars - half of it uninsured. But with every dollar invested in early warnings and climate intelligence, we save up to fifteen. The logic is simple: resilience pays.", said WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo More below 👇 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dnYrBxju #ScienceForAction
