On today's cover: Family Affair — There was a lot to celebrate at Saturday night's Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) gala in Los Angeles; art, film, fashion and, of course, the Los Angeles Dodgers' second consecutive World Series win. For Gucci, it marked the 14th year of being the event's presenting sponsor and also offered a chance for new artistic director Demna to show off some custom designs, like those seen here on mother-daughter supermodel duo Kaia Gerber and Cindy Crawford. As the fashion industry hands the reins to a new generation of designers, the role of fashion critic is rapidly evolving, too. Once restricted to an elite group of editors sitting in the front row at runway shows, critiquing collections has become a spectator sport, with millions delivering instant verdicts online. That has triggered a lively debate about the impact of free speech in a business known for meticulous image control. Content creator Lyas’ watch parties drew over 13,000 people, livestreaming Christian Dior Couture, CHANEL, Saint Laurent and more — complete with QR code ratings, open debates, and even models joining post-show. The rise of social commentators like Brendahashtag, The Kimbino and Ideservecouture helped drive $9.7 million in earned media value this season, reflecting a shift toward candid, unfiltered conversation. But while audiences cheer this new democracy, designers warn that criticism is becoming harsher, and respect is fading. Takeaway: The challenge for brands now isn’t silencing critics — it’s turning their engaged audiences into consumers. https://bit.ly/4nAGyb2

Urban Outfitters has turned its sights to menswear. It’s been about a year since the Philadelphia-based retailer brought Bijon J. on board as general merchandise manager of men’s apparel to jumpstart the business. As Shea Jensen, president of Urban Outfitters, said on the company’s second-quarter earnings call in August: “We’re really excited to be in the progress of rebuilding the men’s assortment with a great new leader in place. I would expect probably by spring that you’ll really see a noticeable difference in that assortment with some evolution between now and then as we build toward that.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/ew-x6SBd

U.S. tariffs will take a big bite out of the French beauty industry, both export- and employment-wise. A year after the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States, the French beauty association Fédération des Entreprises de la Beauté, or FEBEA, unveiled a study, which was carried out by Asterès, that models the impact of U.S. customs duties on French cosmetics exports for 2026. Fragrance and cosmetics are the second-largest export after aeronautics for France. The U.S. is the most important export country for French beauty products. In 2024, almost 3 billion euros’ worth of products were exported to the country, half of which were fragrances. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eJBrwPba
