The best source of inventory may already be in your service drive or showroom. Car Dealership Guy shares why leading buy centers focus on Appraisal-to-Sale, a metric that helps dealers measure trade capture success and identify opportunities to acquire more on-brand inventory directly from consumers.
The top dealership buy centers are hyper-focused on this single metric: Appraisal-to-Sale. Basically the ratio of the vehicles they appraise vs. the cars they actually acquire. The benchmark for success? 1:1 Fall below that threshold and you’re likely not appraising enough cars or not offering enough for those you do evaluate — losing trade-ins to Carvana, CarMax, or another dealer. Bottom line: A higher trade capture rate helps you meet the benchmark. Don’t be afraid to pay slightly more for the right car, especially on-brand. Once you factor in auction fees, transportation, acquisition costs, recon, and the value of keeping the customer, you may not be “overpaying” at all. And the trust you build with the customer is gold. ___ Data via vAuto by Cox Automotive | Watch the full interview with Ken Fisher, Director of Inventory Optimization at Holman Automotive Group for more buy center insights here: https://cox.auto/ustoO
