Science Venture is rebranding! Science Venture, a University of Victoria program supported by the Faculties of Engineering and Computer Science, Science, and Education, has delivered hands-on, minds-on STEM experiences to youth across Vancouver Island for coming up to 35 years — reaching over 300,000 participants through summer camps, clubs, in-school programs, teacher professional development, on-Reserve programming, and community events such as Go ENG Girl, Go CODE Girl, and Science Rendezvous. Though well recognized from its long history, we are presently undergoing a rebrand that will help ensure the program’s identity better represents who we are today and continues to resonate with youth, educators, and community partners. Through this survey, we’re seeking your input to help shape a renewed identity that reflects Science Venture’s impact and the evolution of STEM outreach at UVic. Thanks to everyone who came out to the UVic Engineering and Computer Science and UVic Engineering & Computer Science Co-op #VictoriaTechWeek event at VIATEC last night! It was a full house and the networking after the panel was so engaging that eventually I had to ask folks to leave so that the venue could close 🙃 Thanks especially to our panel - Adam Ryvers (BC Transit), Margaret-Anne Storey (UVic ECS), Corey Scholefield (Workday) and Sasha Zherdeva (UVic CSC student) and our moderator Leo Spalteholz - for the interesting and engaging conversation! I learned that there are definitely areas where AI can improves efficiency in the hiring process (think: scheduling), but the human element is still critical. And our panelists also brought up some key questions and concerns around ethics, bias, and what evidence there is to show effectiveness where AI is being used. My key takeaway: networking is still the most important way to get a job. Kudos to all of the students who attended and put that takeaway into action immediately! Thanks to Sheryl Thompson for conceiving of the event and to her and Tara Coulter for helping make the event come to life! Nice to catch up with Sid Chadda, and to see Mostafa Rahimpour, PhD and David Woodward from the co-op team come out. This Friday, Margaret-Anne Storey will be inducted as a Fellow of the The Royal Society of Canada | La Société royale du Canada. As Canada Research Chair in Human and Social Aspects of Software Engineering, Margaret-Anne is a global leader in human-centred software engineering, bridging sociology and technology to better understand how software impacts people and society.
