District staff recently led a spring tour in Sarasota for members of the Southwest Florida Regional Ambient Monitoring Program (RAMP). They are a collaborative technical work group of scientists and monitoring professionals from local governments, state agencies and environmental organizations. RAMP recently explored the unique hydrogeology of Little Salt Spring and Warm Mineral Springs. These deep, hourglass-shaped cenotes offer a rare look into the Floridan aquifer; Warm Mineral Springs is renowned for its constant 87°F geothermal, highly mineralized flow, while the anoxic depths of Little Salt Spring have preserved a "prehistoric time capsule" of organic history. Beyond their geologic wonder, these sites serve as world-class archaeological landmarks, holding evidence of Paleo-Indian life and extinct megafauna dating back over 12,000 years. By visiting these springs, RAMP members gained a deeper perspective on the long-term intersection of water chemistry, climate change and human history in our region.
