Celebrating 30 Years of San Jose’s Role of MLS Soccer in America On April 6, 1996, San Jose made history at Spartan Stadium with the first MLS match between the San Jose Clash and D.C. United. Legends like Eric Wynalda, John Doyle, and fan-favorite Krazy George ignited a passion that has grown MLS from 10 teams to 30. I was there for Day One and proud to still be a club supporter thirty years and two MLS Cups later. San Jose’s pioneering role - supported by the San Jose Sports Authority and led by the San Jose Earthquakes Soccer organization —helped build a legacy that still inspires as we look ahead to events like the CONCACAF Gold Cup at PayPal Park featuring the US Mens National Team vs Trinidad & Tobago on June 15 and three additional games featuring Curaçao vs El Salvador on 6/16, Jamaica vs Guadeloupe on 6/20 and Honduras vs Curaçao on 6/24 as the South Bay continues to build up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Levi’s Stadium. Thirty years ago, San Jose helped ignite America’s passion for soccer. As we honor that legacy, the San Jose Sports Authority invites you to join us in celebrating this beautiful game with the CONCACAF Gold Cup matches and the Earthquakes regular season at PayPal Park this summer, as we continue to build on our storied history and look ahead to even brighter days. See you at PayPal Park!
