AI can generate student feedback in seconds. Whether it actually helps students learn is a different question. That's the session we've proposed for SXSW EDU 2027, and it's now open for community voting! Jessamy Almquist (Learning Commons), Katie Boody Adorno (Leanlab Education), Peter Gault (Quill.org), and Joy Osborne (Student Achievement Partners) will challenge vendor claims, define what trustworthy evidence looks like, and put an open evaluator to the test in a live demo. A vote takes about 30 seconds and helps decide what makes the SXSW EDU stage. Vote here: https://lnkd.in/ge3NARCX Voting closes August 23.

Quill helps students become strong writers, readers, and critical thinkers through its free AI-powered literacy tools.
About us
Quill’s mission is to help more than 10 million low-income students per year become strong writers, readers, and critical thinkers. Teachers are busier than ever and have little to no time to provide individual writing feedback to their students. Plus, while curriculum experts recommend students write for at least 30 minutes per day, 74% of eighth-grade students and 91% of twelfth-grade students do not spend more than 30 minutes per day writing. By building free online tools that use AI to automatically evaluate student writing, Quill provides 4th- through 12th-grade students with immediate feedback and coaching. This enables students to revise their work immediately and quickly build their literacy skills while saving their teachers precious time. Quill is supported by grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Overdeck Family Foundation, and Google.org, among others.

▶️ #NSSA2026 Conversations: Can AI support learning without doing the learning for students? As AI becomes more common in classrooms, the challenge isn't simply making learning easier. It's designing tools that preserve the productive struggle that helps students grow. Panelists from Bellwether, Quill.org, KIPP Public Schools Northern California, Overdeck Family Foundation, and EdLight, PBC explored: 🔹 How AI can support, rather than replace, human tutors and educators 🔹 Why productive struggle is essential for learning 🔹 What evidence we should expect from AI-powered tutoring tools 🔹 How developers, researchers, and practitioners can work together to build tools that improve outcomes for all students One theme emerged clearly throughout the conversation: Technology can make humans more effective, but it cannot replace the human relationships at the heart of high-impact tutoring. Today we’re announcing that Peter Norvig has joined the Quill.org board of directors! Peter has been an AI advisor to Quill since 2019, connecting with us when we were first building out our initial AI models. At Google, Peter served as a Director of Research, and he was one of the leaders that built Google’s world-changing AI. Peter now serves as a Fellow at Stanford's Human-Centered AI Institute where his classes instruct the next-generation of AI leaders. For Quill, Peter’s advice for the years has helped shaped our AI Strategy as we scaled from preliminary fine-tuned BERT models (back in 2018-2019!) to leveraging the latest Gemini models today. Quill.org expects AI to continue to rapidly evolve over the coming years, and our nonprofit is dedicated to using this powerful technology to help millions of young people become stronger readers, writers, and critical thinkers. We’re grateful that Peter is joining our board alongside the directors who have guided Quill’s nationwide impact: Paul Walker, Quill Board Chair, Partner at Motive Partners Stephanie Cohen, Chief Strategy Officer at Cloudflare Heejae Lim, Founder & CEO at TalkingPoints Matthew Rodriguez, Portfolio Manager at Millennium Management Tony Sebro, General Counsel at Change.org Ben Sussman, Staff Software Engineer at Abridge You can read the press release here: https://lnkd.in/ecu2Xm-T

We’re proud to share that Quill.org has been selected for the Impact Vertical from Fast Forward and LEMNIS! This partnership supports nonprofits working at the intersection of technology, K–12 education, and workforce readiness—and we’re honored to be part of this cohort. For us, this is about continuing to build tools that: → Help students express their ideas clearly → Give teachers better insight into student writing → Use AI in ways that support learning—not shortcut it Excited to collaborate, learn, and keep pushing this work forward!
Excited doesn’t begin to describe how we feel teaming up with LEMNIS! Together, we’re launching an Impact Vertical to help support and scale nonprofits at the intersection of technology, K-12 education, and workforce readiness. With that, we’re proud to welcome to the cohort: • Quill.org, a nonprofit offering free online tools to help students improve grammar and writing skills. • trubel&co, a tech-justice platform for data civics education, mobilizing communities to use local data to tackle social and environmental challenges. • Uprooted Academy, a virtual community center for students of color navigating the high school-to-career pipeline. • UPchieve, an organization providing free, 24/7 online tutoring and college counseling for low-income students in grades 6-12 LEMNIS’ mission to expand learning for all combined with Fast Forward’s goal to realize AI for humanity makes this partnership a no-brainer. We can’t wait to see how these nonprofits continue to build AI-powered solutions that help students, families, and educators access opportunity and prepare for the future of work.

As we're gearing up for conference season, we feel grateful to be part of a community that takes AI in education seriously. Over the past few years, our team at Quill has learned a lot about what it takes to build AI that meets students in the moment of productive struggle, gives meaningful feedback, and helps teachers do what they do best. We're here to share those lessons and learn from others doing the same. A special thank you to NewSchools and Frances Messano and Cameron White for spotlighting our work in your recent newsletter. It means a lot to be recognized by a team that has championed innovation in public education for so long. If you're at ASU+GSV or NSVF Summit, come find us – we'd love to connect. 👋 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gqgumQ-n 🔗https://www.quill.org/ #ASUGSV #EdTech #AIinEducation #WritingMatters #Quill #NewSchools

Quill is thrilled to be a Big Ideas 2026 grantee! 🎉 Through Cambiar Education's Thrive's Big Ideas Challenge, 19 organizations received funding to put the power of data into the hands of students and families, and we're proud to be one of them. With support from Bezos Family Foundation, Walton Family Foundation, and LEMNIS, we're building tools that push students' growth as writers and thinkers and allow them to see and celebrate their progress along the way. We believe that when students have access to meaningful data about their learning, they develop a stronger sense of agency. That's what Quill's tools are designed to do. We're grateful to Christina Heitz, Derwin Sisnett, Alison Lee, john deasy, and the entire Cambiar Education team for championing this vision. We're honored to be in a cohort alongside incredible organizations like CareerVillage Team, Uprooted Academy, UPchieve, Closegap and many others you can see below. Here's to building tools that deepen human connection, not replace it. 💪 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gj-WWJf5 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gHXGEZD3 #BigIdeasChallenge #EdTech #GenerativeAI #WritingMatters #StudentAgency #ProductiveStruggle #CambiarThrive #Quill
