New work features photopatterned electrodes that can be directly manufactured on different types of surfaces, including glass, textiles and even skin! "As the method works on many different surfaces, you can also imagine sensors built into garments." Read the OPN story: https://bit.ly/3N56IG1 #sensors #technology #biomedical #optics

As the year ends, we reflect on the Optica Foundation's role in providing students with vital resources for successful careers in optics and how you can make an impact. Meet the Optica Students at the Multimedia University of Kenya, who are building a pipeline of optics professionals, aiming to reduce educational barriers and simplify the path to graduation. With support from the Optica Foundation, their outreach programs encourage participation in optics, connect students with photonics companies and inspire future scientists and engineers to embrace their potential in the field. Optica VIP Executive Reception at SFMOMA Keynote with John T.C. Lee Monday 19 January, 2026, 19:00 PT The 2026 Optica VIP Executive Reception at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) will welcome John T.C. Lee, President and CEO of MKS Inc. and recipient of the Optica i4 Personal Achievement Prize. In addition to leading one of the industry’s most influential technology companies, John serves on the Executive Team of Trustees for the Global Photonics Economic Forum, shaping global strategies around scaling, supply-chain resilience, and the critical integration of photonics into advanced semiconductor equipment. Across the photonics and semiconductor sectors, John will address scaling speeds demanded by AI, credible technology roadmaps and deeper cross-ecosystem collaboration. During his solo keynote at SFMOMA2026, John will outline the primary growth levers set to define the next three to five years: automation, productivity acceleration and the expanding role of photonics in next-generation semiconductor processes. Attendance is by invitation only. If you are a C-level executive and have not received an invitation to attend, please contact Carmen Paños and visit us here: https://bit.ly/3MxL9hp This reception is sponsored by Opsydia, MKS and PHIX Photonics Assembly

Chip-scale magnetometer uses light for high-precision magnetic sensing: https://bit.ly/4aSQFFb The new precision magnetometer, based on a magneto-optic material that alters its properties in response to a magnetic field, has the potential to enable lightweight and low-power sensing for applications in space, navigation, and medicine. Additionally, to make it more practical, the researchers designed the magnetometer using silicon photonics, a technology that fabricates tiny optical devices from the same silicon found in microchips.
