Today marks the first-ever International Day of the Deep Seabed - a reminder that this vast, mysterious world beneath our oceans is part of the common heritage of humankind. At IUCN, we’re working with partners to ensure that any decisions about the deep seabed are informed, inclusive, and focused on safeguarding it for future generations. IUCN resolution 122 (2021) states the conditions that need to be met before any deep seabed mining activities can be considered. Through the Deep Sea Dialogues, convened last July alongside Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy and Oceano Azul Foundation during the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Assembly in Jamaica, we continue to bring together science, policy, and diverse voices to guide collective stewardship of this fragile frontier. The deep seabed may be out of sight - but it must never be out of mind. 🌾📘 A recently launched IUCN report explores how agricultural subsidies and trade policies influence biodiversity, revealing strong links between agricultural practices and species decline. The publication — “Agricultural support, biodiversity, and trade: Examining connections to repurpose harmful incentives", highlights that sustainable farming and thriving ecosystems can go hand in hand when policies consider nature alongside food security. 🌱 With support and collaboration from the Australian Permanent Mission at the WTO and AFD - Agence Française de Développement, this initiative marks an important step toward building a more sustainable and nature-positive future for all. 💚 Read more: https://bit.ly/4n2cBjS #NaturePositive #Biodiversity #SustainableAgriculture #TradeAndBiodiversity #PeopleAndPlanet #FoodSystems #Sustainability

Nearly 100 additional wild bee species in Europe have been classified as threatened in a new assessment for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, with more than 20% of species in groups such as bumblebees and cellophane bees now facing a risk of extinction. New IUCN Red List assessments also reveal that the number of threatened European butterfly species increased by a sharp 76% over the last decade. Funded by the European Commission, the latest European-level assessments for the IUCN Red List re-evaluate the conservation status of a large number of species groups for the first time since the early and mid-2010s: bees, butterflies, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, freshwater fishes and molluscs, saproxylic (wood-dependent) beetles, dragonflies and damselflies.
