Key requirements for the built environment 🏙️ In the new year, work will get under way on a review designed to “establish a baseline for the performance of the UK’s built systems, provide solid evidence for the economic value of applying systems approaches to the built environment, and recommend practical steps for positive industry change”. The Built Environment Systems Review will be commissioned by the Infrastructure Client Group, representing the UK’s largest owners and operators of social and economic infrastructure, with government backing. It is hoped that insights and resulting recommendations will help organisations right across the value chain to: 🚨 Tackle “generational issues” including net zero, resilience, nature recovery, security and social equity. 🌍 Work towards better defined economic, social and environmental outcomes. 💰 Align investment and interventions to achieve those outcomes. 🏢 Improve the performance and effectiveness of both existing assets and new projects. 🚫 Better address persistent blockers to industry productivity and efficiency – something that is essential for delivering the UK Infrastructure Pipeline, currently valued at £540bn to 2035 and likely to swell to over £725bn. As the review gears up to start, the Built Environment Connective and Building Magazine, with support from consultant Buro Happold, brought together an expert panel to explore how systems thinking can transform industry and government decision-making for the better. The Infrastructure Client Group Annual Report 2025 is here! This year’s report showcases how the ICG is driving progress across the UK’s infrastructure sector, helping clients, government, and industry work together to deliver growth, climate resilience, and social value. Over the past year, the ICG has: - Expanded its Climate Task Group to include nature and resilience, launching both the Nature Accelerator and the next phase of the Concrete Decarbonisation Accelerator. - Advanced digital integration through the Digital Integration Accelerator, promoting seamless collaboration across projects. - Formed a new People Task Group to address skills, inclusion, and workforce development challenges. - Helped develop a new PAS 4010 productivity standard and practical tools to improve efficiency across infrastructure delivery. - Strengthened the Project 13 community — embedding enterprise collaboration models across the sector. Today marked the inaugural meeting of the People Task Group — a new initiative focused on tackling workforce-related challenges across the infrastructure sector. The group includes client representatives across the energy, water, rail, transport, health, and environment sectors, with more yet to join! This group has been formed to encourage collaboration across clients, reduce duplication of efforts, and focus on workforce issues that are uniquely within the client domain. We're excited to see how this group will drive meaningful change in addressing talent and workforce needs across the industry. Stay tuned for what’s next! Yesterday, the ICG's Climate Task Group, chaired by Rachel Skinner CBE, convened to discuss a range of climate-related topics. The focus was on three primary areas: decarbonisation, nature, and climate resilience. The group benefited from the insights of external speakers who addressed green steel, the new climate adaptation pathways PAS, and an online platform providing the latest guidance and resources for managing carbon reduction in buildings and infrastructure. The Task Group also received an update on the progress of their own Nature Accelerator. The natural environment is one of the UK’s most valuable national assets, delivering significant economic and societal benefits. The Nature Accelerator is exploring how the ICG is uniquely positioned to lead and deliver a collaborative, cross-sector approach that enables its clients to become industry leaders in nature recovery, ultimately saving time and money, while embedding nature as a strategic priority in infrastructure planning and delivery. There was also an update on Phase Two of the Group's Concrete Decarbonisation Accelerator. This included the new work being undertaken to underpin the commitments established in Phase One which identified the need for the a joined up approach to applying low carbon concrete technology, amongst many other areas! Last week, the Built Environment Connective launched Connect to Change: Unlocking the Value of Systems Thinking in the Built Environment. This document highlights the value of seeing the built environment as a 'system of systems' with interconnected layers that all rely upon each other. These systems currently often operate in silos while bigger issues such as climate change don't, time to connect them up! We were delighted to hear from Becky Wood FCA, FICE about the National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority (NISTA)'s expanded remit, the 10 Year Infrastructure Strategy and how systems thinking can be best utilised to help deliver their pipeline of projects. Also speaking was our own chair, Jason Tucker. Jason spoke about how the ICG supports the initiative and how it can help both clients and the communities in which they operate. He also highlighted how we must unlock greater value from our current infrastructure as 90% of what we will rely on in the next 10 years already exists. On Friday 6th June, members of the ICG attended an event in London to launch Rebuilding Nature. This cross-sectoral alliance focuses on creating a Strategic Nature Network by restoring and connecting dynamic ecosystems as critical infrastructure to protect the UK.   ICG’s Climate Task Group chair Rachel Skinner CBE spoke on a panel about the opportunity to plan for nature as critical infrastructure. Alongside supporting Rebuilding Nature, the ICG is also undertaking a new Nature Accelerator which hopes to utilise the knowledge and shared experience of its large member network, and their shared land holding, to show how infrastructure providers may act to enable the Strategic Nature Network. #StrategicNatureNetwork #NatureAccelerator
