“What impressed me most was the willingness of researchers, publishers and infrastructure partners — from technology providers to funders and service organizations — to move beyond defending their positions” Ingo Rother - Managing Director, Berlin Institute for Scholarly Publishing (BISP)/Conference Director, APE - Academic Publishing in Europe That spirit of openness set the tone for the Mind the Gap: AI in Publishing workshop. Across discussions, participants focused less on competing interests and more on shared priorities: trust, accountability, transparency, and safeguarding scholarly quality. AI in publishing isn’t a “publisher vs. researcher” debate. It’s a collective challenge — and an opportunity — for the entire scholarly ecosystem. Real progress will come from continued dialogue, listening across roles, and keeping all stakeholders engaged as AI tools and policies evolve. "I really appreciated the format of the ‘Mind the Gap: AI in Publishing’ workshop: short, sharp talks to get everyone aligned" Harry Blom, PhD, Executive Vice President STM, De Gruyter Brill, Inc. During the workshop at #APE 2026 co-organized by Dr. Jess Rohmann, Postdoctoral Researcher at Berlin Institute of Health, QUEST Center for Responsible Research and Dr. Anke Beck, Head of Public Affairs and Advocacy for Europe at Frontiers, what stood out in the discussions was that AI in editorial workflows is about far more than efficiency. Participants consistently highlighted deeper gaps around decision-making, trust, and responsible AI use, alongside the need to safeguard editorial expertise and core scholarly skills. A timely reminder that AI challenges reach to the heart of research and publishing values, and that these conversations must continue to evolve just as quickly as the technology itself.
