Honoring a Visionary: Frank Gehry (1929–2025) Last week, the AEC world lost a true icon. Frank Gehry’s bold, imaginative designs transformed skylines and inspired generations. We here at DCI had the honor to collaborate on Gehry’s landmark project, The Grand LA, in downtown Los Angeles—a mixed-use development that redefines urban living and cultural engagement. Gehry’s vision for The Grand LA helped create a vibrant hub for art, dining, and community, and we’re proud to have leveraged structural engineering to bring that vision to life. His legacy will continue to shape the built environment for decades to come. In downtown Austin, Icon takes off-campus student housing to a whole new level! This 30-story tower provides efficiency-forward studios on up to spacious five-bedroom units for a total of 555 beds. The project features a rooftop pool, fitness center, game and lounge rooms, media studio, and student work spaces. This fall, DCI joined the rest of the project team for the ribbon cutting of The Press, Wilmington, Delaware’s newest residential, mixed-used development. The 14-story, post-tensioned concrete tower features studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, along with a pool, dog run, lounges and a roof deck overlooking downtown Wilmington. San Diego County’s first affordable community college student housing project has broken ground! The San Diego City College student housing community will include apartment-style units, study lounges, a fitness center, rooftop lounge, and tutoring spaces. The project has received significant coverage, with local media affiliates reporting on what this will mean for students. We’re proud to share the news of two DCI/CollinsWoerman projects at this year’s NAIOP Night of the Stars (NOTS) – Symetra Center, which took home Redevelopment/Renovation of the Year, and Avenue Bellevue, which won Mixed-Use Development of the Year! The annual NAIOP NOTS Awards celebrate a project team’s commitment to an outstanding quality product, success in the marketplace, and uniqueness in design of a project. Avenue Bellevue features two 26- and 27-story towers with a luxury hotel and condos situated over 85,000-sf of retail and restaurant space, along with three levels of below-grade parking. Symetra Center is the transformation of a tower into premier Class-A office space with a hospitality-driven design that reused materials and expanded amenity spaces, including conference areas, dining, and expanded lobby. Rock on! Last month, Portland’s newest music venue broke ground at the Lloyd Center, a yet-to-be-named space that will provide an intimate music and entertainment experience with a 4,250-seat capacity. “I don’t think there’s going to be a bad seat in this house,” said Claire Dennerlein, publicity director for Portland band Pink Martini in a recent KGW8 news story. “That alone makes bands confident they’ll put on a great show and fans confident they’re going to buy tickets to something special.” DCI has been actively involved in several Lloyd Center projects, including demolition of the Nordstrom retail space the music venue is replacing. Shoutout to Project Manager Ilya Palnikov and Project Engineer Cole Boileau for representing DCI at the groundbreaking! When space is limited in an urban area, the only way to go is up! It’s what happens with most projects, and it’s exactly what the project team did for a massive 1.2M-sf warehouse in a Midwest metropolis. Costa Vista, the first co-located housing project between a community college and the University of California, has broken ground, making this fast-track project well on its way for a 36-month delivery. With 624 beds, along with childcare, wellness, and essential support services on location, the Cabrillo College/UC Santa Cruz project demonstrates what’s possible through fast, affordable, and student-centered housing!
