An ambitious project by Maffeis Engineering, in collaboration with sister Sidara company Dar, Pascoli Engineering Srl, and Pier Currà Architettura. A state-of-the-art arena, set in the heart of Parco Millepini and designed to host sports, performances, cultural events, and entertainment all year round. Its design, inspired by the gentle contours of the Asiago Plateau, shapes the arena into a “hidden pavilion” , a structure seamlessly integrated into the landscape, featuring a green roof and wide glass façades that blend light, nature, and architecture. How can infrastructure survive one of history’s strongest earthquakes? An event that occurs once in a millennium? In February 2023, two of the strongest earthquakes in Türkiye’s recent history consecutively struck the southern region with devastating force. The fault erupted close to the strategic Tarsus–Adana–Gaziantep (TAG) motorway, which includes two tall viaducts designed by Dar before 2000: the Ataturk and Turgut Ozal Viaducts. Originally designed for an earthquake with a peak ground acceleration of 0.4g (which corresponds to a return period of about 500 years and a seismic performance level of “Life Safety), these viaducts, which were within 250 metres of the fault line, endured a far more powerful shaking magnitude of 0.607g, corresponding to Turkiye’s strongest-ever, once-in-a-thousand-year event earthquake. Both viaducts were overloaded by about 50% beyond what they were designed for, and yet, they did not collapse, surviving the mega earthquake with limited damages. These original designs and the assessment of the performance of these two viaducts were the subject of a recent paper in the leading STRUCTURE Magazine. Discover more: https://rb.gy/r0ige2
