"If we don't have the food stamps, then I'm going to have to rely on City Harvest even more," Dessairee shared at our Sunset Park Mobile Market, where she picks up fresh food, free of charge for herself and her son. Today marks a devastating new chapter in the government shutdown: The federal government has stopped funding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for the first time in history. Last week we partnered with Blue Star Families to deliver carrots, potatoes, onions, peanut butter, cooking oil, rice, and pasta to nearly 200 active-duty military, veterans, and members of the military community at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island and Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. We are proud to be able to serve members of the military and their families, who, like so many of our neighbors, are struggling to make ends meet in the face of an affordability crisis in our city. As the government shutdown continues, even more of our fellow New Yorkers could find themselves in need of food assistance No matter what happens in the weeks to come, City Harvest will be here working to provide as much food as we can to anyone in our city who needs it. Visit www.cityharvest.org to donate or find free food near you.

Earlier this week, our CEO Jilly Stephens kicked-off our involvement in Climate Week by speaking on a Food Tank panel focusing on solutions to food waste. Through our food rescue model, we support environmental health—this year, we will prevent the equivalent of more than 25.4 million kilograms of CO2 from entering the atmosphere—while providing New Yorkers with the food they need to thrive. September is Hunger Action Month and the need for food assistance in New York City is the highest on record. Because of recent historic cuts to federal food assistance programs, nearly 1.8 million New Yorkers could see their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program (SNAP) benefits decrease, and 200,000 New Yorkers, particularly aging adults, could lose access entirely. We must do more to ensure that every New Yorker has access to the fresh, nutritious food they need to thrive. You can play a critical role to help provide food for our NYC neighbors in need this Hunger Action Month. There are so many ways you can get involved—volunteer, donate, advocate, and more.
