Highest standards, better outcomes. We are the largest professional organization of surgeons in the world.

About us

The American College of Surgeons has been dedicated to improving the care of the surgical patient and safeguarding standards of care for more than 110 years. With more than 90,000 members worldwide, 2,500 participating hospitals in our quality programs, and 50 million+ patient records tracked through our surgical registries, healing all with skill and trust remains our #1 focus. Membership opportunities are available for anyone in any stage of their surgical career. To be a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, or FACS, signifies that a surgeon’s education, training, professional competencies, qualifications, and ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation consistent with the high standards established and required by the College. In addition to Fellows in all surgical specialties and in all practice settings, residents, medical students, and surgical team members all have a place within the ACS, the House of Surgery™. Our robust quality improvement and surgical education programs can lead to greater access for patients, fewer complications, lower cost of care, and better outcomes. Our quality accreditation and verification programs, products, guidelines, and tools improve quality in trauma, cancer, breast disease, bariatrics, children's surgery, geriatric surgery, and overall surgical care. • #ACSLAS26 is rapidly approaching. We have two great pre-conference workshops available to you covering communications opportunities for those passionate about published research and developing your personal brand. Domestic members interested in advocacy, the Summit is the perfect place to get your foot in the door. Dr. Sutherland's got the registration link for you below. We can't wait to see you there!

Join us Saturday, February 28, at #ACSLAS26 for workshops preceding the Summit’s start on Sunday, March 1.  From 12:00 to 2:50 pm, Dr. Tom Varghese, editor in chief of JACS, and the Division of Integrated Communications will host Leadership in Action: Making the Most of Your Communications Opportunities—From Published Research to Media Interviews. In this workshop, you will learn how to increase the visibility of your most important research. In today’s fractured media climate, surgeons must be well versed in every type of communication, from published articles to social media to media interviews. For nearly 3 hours, you will be able to get hands-on experience from ACS subject matter experts. This only happens once a year; I urge you to take advantage of it. From 3:00 to 5:00 pm, Dr. Kimberly Whitler, associate professor of business administration at the University of Virginia, will host Building Your Leadership Brand to Increase Impact. Technical excellence alone is not enough. Becoming a change leader requires you to know how to position yourself with greater impact. I know firsthand the value add of a business background, and I am looking forward to stopping by this session.   Make sure you register for the Summit—domestic Fellows, Capitol Hill visits are open to you. Again, I urge you all to take this opportunity to speak with your elected officials and their healthcare staff. We have a lot of work to do, and I’m looking forward to starting 2026 off strong.  https://lnkd.in/g3Hx4J_7
