Great news for Alaska! Alaska Legal Services Corporation (ALSC) was recently awarded $1 million from the Rasmuson Foundation to support its community justice worker program. Currently, ALSC trains community justice workers to provide legal assistance in specialized areas such as debt-collection defense, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) advocacy, domestic violence protective orders, and more. With this funding, ALSC will be able to train more workers, which in turn will allow the organization to help more people with their everyday legal problems. Thanks to 2022 Disaster Supplemental Grant funding from LSC, the Community Justice Worker (CJW) Disaster Relief Project is making significant strides in addressing disaster-related legal needs in rural and tribal communities across Alaska and in the communities served by our partners: Oklahoma Indian Legal Services, Montana Legal Services Association, DNA People's Legal Services, and Anishinabe Legal Services.

Thousands of Alaskans may wait weeks or even months for SNAP decisions. For many, that can mean going without consistent access to food while navigating a complex process. You can help. SNAP Advocacy volunteers support individuals through the application and appeals process, helping them understand their rights and access the food assistance they need. Community Justice Workers are helping expand access to justice across Alaska, contributing to nearly one in five Alaska Legal Services cases in 2025. To support this growing network, the CJW Resource Center is launching three new free, self-paced legal training courses: • Disaster Response • Eviction Defense • Probate Registration is now open. Courses are offered at no cost to eligible Community Justice Workers who agree to take at least one ALSC volunteer case or share general legal information with their communities. Home Base Families of the Fallen Intensive Clinical Program: Mary Gusentine - condensing up to 2 years of treatment into just two weeks for this incredibly important population Legal Aid Of West Virginia: Elizabeth & Schuyler, who are expanding the medical-legal partnership model for low-income veterans in the rural Southern coalfields (including when there's a health problem that has a legal solution) Nation's Finest: Chris Flaherty & Trevor Thomson - among their many programs are mobile service units (vans!) to bring services to rural, remote (not the same thing!) and tribal communities PCCI - Project Community Connections: Jimiyu Evans & Jamie Urban - in my hometown of ATL!!! extra kudos for the LOVE Fund, a flexible funding pool for housing veterans; I hope to see more communities implement this innovative approach with the support of NATIONAL COALITION FOR HOMELESS VETERANS (https://lnkd.in/giZFYimq) Rutgers University, Vets4Warriors: General Mark Graham & Jill - when an individual veteran asks for resources, this is usually the first place I suggest; they hit their millionth contact this year!
