About STDs

About STDs

Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the two most common sexually transmitted infections. They can spread through vaginal, anal, and oral sex, causing infections of the genitals, rectum, and throat. This test is designed to detect genital infections (affecting the penis or vagina)*.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. It can affect anyone who is sexually active. Chlamydia typically does not cause symptoms. Routine screening and early detection are essential as untreated chlamydia can spread easily to partners and have long-term health consequences.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can affect anyone who is sexually active. Gonorrhea typically does not cause symptoms. Routine screening and early detection are essential as untreated gonorrhea can spread easily to partners and have long-term health consequences.

*If you are concerned about rectal or throat infections please talk to your healthcare provider about testing.

Most people with chlamydia and gonorrhea do not experience any symptoms. If symptoms do develop, they are likely to occur within two weeks of exposure to the infection.

Symptoms of genital chlamydia and gonorrhea may include:
  • Painful urination

  • New or unusual discharge from the penis or vagina

  • Vaginal bleeding after sex or between periods

  • Pain during sex

  • Pain or swelling in the testicles (typically only on one side)

If you have rectal or throat symptoms or if you are concerned about infections in those areas, talk to your healthcare provider about testing.

In persons with female anatomy, symptoms such as pelvic pain, pain during sex, and unusual vaginal discharge or bad odor can be indicative of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and may warrant in-person evaluation with a healthcare provider. PID is a complication of chlamydia and gonorrhea and early identification and treatment are crucial to reduce long-term effects. If you’re concerned about these symptoms, please talk to your healthcare provider before taking this test.

In persons with male anatomy, symptoms such as pain in the pelvis, lower abdomen, or testicles may be a sign of epididymitis (inflammation of the tube that carries and stores sperm). Don’t delay speaking with your healthcare provider if you are experiencing these symptoms

Routine testing is a normal part of being sexually active. Anyone who is sexually active can get chlamydia and gonorrhea but these infections often have no symptoms. Yearly screening is a great addition to your health calendar.

Testing outside of your normal schedule is particularly important if:
  • You start a new sexual relationship

  • You have multiple sexual partners

  • You are in a non-monogamous relationship

  • You have unprotected sex

  • You are experiencing symptoms of an infection

Chlamydia and gonorrhea can cause infections of the genital area (vagina and penis), rectum, and/or throat so the test you need depends on your sexual activity — the Simple 2 Test offered by LetsGetChecked detects chlamydia and gonorrhea in genital areas only.

If you are concerned about possible exposure to an STD you should avoid sexual activity until you receive a test result.

If you are experiencing symptoms or have been informed by a partner that they have a sexually transmitted infection, you should follow up with your healthcare provider.

If you require urgent care or have any concerns, contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

The Simple 2 Test involves collecting a penile urine sample or vaginal swab sample to send to our partner laboratories to test for genital chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Collect your Simple 2 sample:
  • Monday-Friday

  • And return on the same day.

Don’t forget
  • It takes from 1 to 3 weeks from the time of exposure for chlamydia and gonorrhea to become detectable in a sample. This is called the window period. If you test before the window period has ended you may receive a negative result even when you have the infection.

  • Read all the instructions and warnings before you collect your sample.

Vaginal swab sample

If you have a vagina and engage in vaginal sex, you should collect a vaginal swab sample to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea. Vaginal swabs are more sensitive than urine samples for detecting vaginal chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Penile urine sample

If you have a penis, you should collect a urine sample to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea. The urine sample you collect must be the first part of your urine stream; do not urinate for at least one hour before collecting your sample.
