About this test

About this test

You should consider getting tested if:

- You become sexually active - You have had unprotected sex - You are experiencing symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection - You are entering into a new sexual relationship - You have received a notification from a previous partner that they are infected If you are experiencing symptoms or have been informed by a partner that they have a sexually transmitted infection, you should follow up with your healthcare provider.

If you require urgent care or have any concerns, contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

You must be at least 18 years of age to use this kit.

It can take time between exposure to an infection and when it shows up in a test. This is called the window period. For chlamydia and gonorrhea, it can take from 1 to 3 weeks. For trichomoniasis, it can take up to 4 weeks. For Hepatitis B and syphilis, it can take up to 12 weeks.

If you are concerned about possible exposure to one of these infections you should talk to your healthcare provider about when to test and refrain from sexual activity until you receive a test result. For some infections, retesting after treatment may be required.

When to collect your sample:

The urine sample must be collected from the initial stream of urine in the morning and returned on the same day. Do not cleanse the genital area or urinate at least 1 hour prior to collection.

The sample must be collected in the morning on a Monday - Friday, and returned on the same day.

Chlamydia

Clinical Guidance

Chlamydia is a common STI that often shows no symptoms. If left untreated, it can result in serious health complications and can easily be spread to partners, so it’s important to take action. This test includes a urine sample and will not find chlamydia outside of the genital area, for example, oral or rectal chlamydia. If you think you are at risk of chlamydia in other areas, for example as a result or oral or anal sex, you will need to visit a provider for a swab test of the area.

Gonorrhea

Clinical Guidance

Gonorrhea is especially common among young adults. Some men, and most women, experience no symptoms so screening is important. This test includes a urine sample and will not find gonorrhea outside of the genital area, for example, oral or rectal gonorrhea. If you think you are at risk of gonorrhea in other areas, for example as a result of oral or anal sex, you will need to visit a provider for a swab test of the area.

Hepatitis B

Clinical Guidance

Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus. The testing offered by LetsGetChecked looks for the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). This can be found in high levels during acute or chronic hepatitis B infection. HBsAg usually means that the person is infectious. In some cases it can also be found within 30 days after hepatitis B vaccination. This test cannot provide a diagnosis and further testing will be required if you receive a reactive test result.

Syphilis

Clinical Guidance

Anyone can get syphilis through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. If left untreated, syphilis can cause damage to many parts of the body including the brain, heart and joints. This screening test cannot diagnose syphilis and further testing will be required if you receive a reactive test result. If you have previously been diagnosed with syphilis, you will receive a reactive test result.

Mycoplasma

Clinical Guidance

Symptoms can include pain or burning when peeing, white or cloudy discharge from the vagina or penis and pain during sex. Testing for mycoplasma is not usually recommended for those who do not have symptoms.

Ureaplasma

Clinical Guidance

Ureaplasma often occurs naturally and for many people does not cause any problems. It is only when there is an overgrowth of this bacteria that symptoms can occur and treatment may be needed. For people who do not have symptoms, treatment is not usually required.

Trichomoniasis

Clinical Guidance

Trichomoniasis is the most common curable STD. Only 30% of people with this disease develop symptoms, so regular testing is important. If left untreated, the disease can last for months or even years.

Gardnerella (Bacterial Vaginosis)

Clinical Guidance

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a condition that can happen when there is too much of a certain bacteria in the vagina. Gardnerella is one bacteria that can cause BV. Symptoms of BV include unusual vaginal discharge and odor. If you are experiencing these symptoms or if you are pregnant, treatment is recommended.

Symptoms of sexually transmitted infections will vary from person-to-person depending on the infection. These can include:

  • Pain when peeing

  • Pain during sex

  • Rash on the genitals or anus

  • Itching or irritation on the genitals and/or anus

  • Unusual lumps or bumps around the genitals and/or anus

  • Change in discharge

  • Strong vaginal odor

If you are experiencing any symptoms or if you have any concerns, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider.
