Gas Permits
Gas permits ensure that natural gas installations are completed safely and meet provincial code requirements. Whether you're adding a new gas appliance, installing a firepit, or upgrading gas lines in your home, a permit helps protect you, your property, and your neighbours.
Before beginning construction, review the information on this page to ensure your project meets all requirements and that you have applied for the necessary permits.
When do you need a permit?
Licensed gasfitters or mechanical contractors must apply for all gas permits. Homeowners cannot obtain a gas permit unless they are certified gasfitters.
- Portable propane appliances (e.g., BBQ's, patio heaters)
- Maintenance or service by a licensed gas fitter that doesn't involve new piping or venting
How to apply?
You can apply online through eApply or in person at City Hall.
Your application should include:
- Property address and description of work
- List of appliances or systems to be installed
- Piping diagram (for new installations)
- BTU input and pressure settings for appliances
- Contractor name and license number
For larger projects, also include mechanical drawings showing venting, combustion air, and clearances.
Permit Fees
- Residential: minimum permit fee of $110.00 plus applicable Safety Codes Council levy. Fees increase based on the total construction value.
- Commercial: minimum permit fee of $250.00 plus applicable Safety Codes Council levy. Fees increase based on the total construction value.
Inspections
Inspections are required at key stages of construction:
- Rough-in (after piping is installed, before covering)
- Final (after appliances are installed, and venting is completed)
You must schedule inspections at least one business day in advance. Please schedule using the eInspections portal.
