Longtime Oklahoma politician and former U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe has died at the age of 89 in Tulsa.
Inhofe died at 4:48 a.m. on Tuesday after suffering a stroke during the Fourth of July holiday. He surrounded by his wife, Kay, and his three surviving children, Molly, Jimmy and Katy.
The Republican lawmaker was a fixture in Oklahoma politics for more than 50 years. He ran for public office 51 times, winning 48 of those races.
Inhofe held one of Oklahoma's two U.S. Senate seats since 1994, serving five terms in office before retiring in 2023. He also served in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, the Oklahoma state Senate, as the mayor of Tulsa, in the U.S. House of Representatives.
While in the U.S. Senate, Inhofe served as chairman of the Armed Services Committee and as chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee. Inhofe, a longtime aviator who once flew a small plane around the world, passed the Pilot's Bill of Rights.
"To the people of Oklahoma, I really thank what you've done for me all these years. Thank you very much. I love you guys," Inhofe said during a farewell speech in November 2022.
Inhofe was the longest-serving U.S. senator in Oklahoma history.
