U.S. officials announced agreement to provide security guarantees to Ukraine following talks in Berlin, aiming to support Kyiv amid ongoing peace negotiations with Russia.
Washington confirmed Monday that it will offer security guarantees to Kyiv as part of broader peace discussions with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The move comes amid delicate negotiations addressing Moscow’s demands for territorial concessions in the Donbas region.
Negotiations, reported by the Associated Press, are expected to continue later this week, focusing on finalizing the scope and timing of these guarantees while ensuring Ukraine retains essential defense capabilities. The talks also aim to maintain strong European involvement in the process.
Key U.S. envoys, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, played central roles in bridging differences over security guarantees. Officials stressed that while a framework is in place, final approval from the U.S. Congress, including the Senate, will be required before implementation.
President Donald Trump met with European leaders in Berlin and expressed optimism about the progress, stating, “We are closer to an agreement than ever before,” while highlighting the importance of transatlantic support for Kyiv.
Reports indicated that these security guarantees could strengthen Kyiv’s negotiating position, signaling continued U.S. and European backing and providing assurance against further destabilization in eastern Ukraine.
Experts caution that Moscow’s insistence on territorial concessions in Donbas remains a significant hurdle, meaning the success of the peace process will depend on balancing Ukraine’s sovereignty with strategic compromises.
