A new law went into effect this week to help make Nebraska roads a little safer. Before, the so-called "move over law" applied to just emergency or road side assistance vehicles.

This is an editorial from KETV's president and General Manager Allison Smith A new law went into effect this week to help make Nebraska roads a little safer. Before, the so-called "move over law" applied to just emergency or road side assistance vehicles. Now, drivers must slow down or move over when they see any stopped vehicle. You also have to slow down or move over for anyone else using the road. That means anyone — someone walking or riding a bike or driving a tractor. The fines for speeding have also gone up. Driving more than twice the posted speed limit is now considered "reckless driving." The D-O-T can also reduce speed limits if conditions warrant — if there's bad weather or an emergency. All of these things should be good practice and common sense. Now they're the law. This shouldn't just be about avoiding a ticket or a fine. This is a reminder, we all have a part to play, to make sure our roads and streets are safe.
