Ireland weather: Met Eireann issue 24-hour rain warning for four counties ahead of severe downpours

A weather expert has warned that we are in for a miserable few days, with heavy rainfall set to lead to localised flooding and difficult travel conditions

Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow - Rain Warning for four counties as the west of Ireland looks set to be hit by heavy downpours on Sunday.

The 24-hour weather alert, which has been issued for Clare, Kerry, Galway and Mayo, will come into effect at 8pm on Sunday evening and will remain in place 8pm on Monday evening.

Met Eireann has warned that western counties will be hit by persistent rain, turning heavy at times, which could lead to localised flooding, difficult travel conditions and poor visibility.

According to weather expert Alan O'Reilly, who mans the ever-reliable Carlow Weather social media account, it is set to be a miserable end to the weekend, with the heavy downpours set to arrive tomorrow night expected to continue into next week.

In a message shared on X / Twitter on Saturday evening, O'Reilly said: "A bright start to Sunday for many before cloud increases with some showers and then persistent rain moves in from West after sunset. A lot of rain to fall between Sunday night and Tuesday morning."

Met Eireann has warned that a low pressure will dominate Ireland's weather this week, bringing unsettled conditions with rain, showers and blustery winds at times.

According to the national forecaster, Sunday will start off mainly dry with spells of sunshine and just well scattered showers. However, it will turn cloudier through the day with patchy rain and drizzle developing over the western half of the country in the evening, with highest afternoon temperatures of 9C to 12C in moderate southwest winds.

On Sunday night, rain will affect all areas. It will be heavy at times and will become more showery in nature overnight. It will be a mild evening with lowest temperatures of 12C to 14C with fresh to strong southwesterly winds.

On Monday, there will be further spells of rain, heavy at times, with highest temperatures of 13C to 15C with fresh to strong southwesterly winds.

On Monday night, rain will continue for a time, but will mostly clear overnight with showers following from the west. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees with fresh southwesterly winds.
