Woe be upon those who think it’s Elvis singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” over the trailer for “Pluribus,” Vince Gilligan’s new series for Apple TV, debuting November 7. It’s the Righteous Brothers!
That’s exactly the kind of petty nitpicking that would probably annoy the hell out of Rhea Seehorn‘s Carol in the new show, which appears to be Gilligan leaving the “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” universe behind and going fully into “Twilight Zone” territory. [Rod Serling voice]: Imagine a world where everyone is forced to be happy, and the one person who is not faces societal pressure to be “fixed.”
This is Gilligan going fully outside the box, with the official logline reading “the most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness.” It’ll unspool weekly on the streamer (don’t call it Apple TV+!) through December 26. The nine-episode drama series also stars Karolina Wydra (“Sneaky Pete”) and Carlos-Manuel Vesga (“The Hijacking of Flight 601”), and guest stars Miriam Shor (“American Fiction”) and Samba Schutte (“Our Flag Means Death”).
“Pluribus” of course is the dative case Latin form meaning “of many” as in “E Pluribus Unum,” the traditional motto of the United States: “Out of many, one.” Carol, beware, you are not “of many” in this case.
As a then-untitled project, the show was first announced in 2022, and will be produced by Sony Pictures Television and executive produced by Emmy Award-winning Gilligan alongside WGA Award winner Gordon Smith, Alison Tatlock, Diane Mercer, Allyce Ozarski, and Jeff Frost. Jenn Carroll and Trina Siopy serve as co-executive producers.
This is not entirely unfamiliar territory for Gilligan, as, of course, he got his start with “The X-Files,” which certainly featured a healthy dose of social commentary of its own. (Ryan Coogler has said he’s planning an “X-Files” reboot on his own, and it’s unclear if Gilligan would at all be involved with that.) And he’s explored quite a few genres throughout his career, even the superhero genre with his screenplay for 2008’s “Hancock.”
“Pluribus” debuts on Apple TV on Friday, November 7, with new episodes dropping weekly through December 26 after that. Watch the trailer for “Pluribus” below.
