The Best TV from October — New Shows, Great Finales, and Hidden Gems

This past month, “Bob’s Burgers” kept cooking after its 300th episode, a Sundance TV series actually found a streaming home, and Tim Robinson began his reign over HBO.

October turned out to be a great month for television. The wave of fall programming brought in a fresh ocean of treasures, whether you were looking for comedies, dramas, docs, or a something distinct — and even more if you go by critical consensus, rather than only listening to your good buddy Ben. (That’s me. Hi.)

The one sore spot: horror. Those in the Halloween spirit saw more tricks than treats this month, with marquee TV offerings like “Monster: The Ed Gein Story,” “Talamasca: The Secret Order,” and “It: Welcome to Derry” all failing to live up to even reasonable expectations. Meanwhile, “Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy” earned a clown car of praise compared to its true-crime peers (mainly by avoiding crass references like the one I just made), and there’s an argument to be made for frights to be found in Tim Robinson’s oft-disturbing HBO comedy, “The Chair Company.” But that’s about it.

With the holiday season already upon us, it’s tempting to look ahead and find a few anticipated TV shows to hunker down with as the nights get longer. (Or maybe that’s just me? Not everyone maps out their monthly TV consumption via calendar? Whoops, sorry, I’m a planner.) Previews are great (and we’ve got plenty of ‘em), but rather than look ahead for what might be interesting in a few weeks, sometimes you need to know what you can watch right now. That’s where this list comes in:

Each month, IndieWire will assess the recent TV landscape and spotlight the best of what’s already available, at this very moment, as soon as you’re done reading all your options. We’ll include premieres of brand-new shows (in case you want to get in the ground floor or start watching week-to-week), finales of recent seasons (for those who prefer to start a series only when all episodes are available), and random episodes that deserve their own time in the sun (because there’s so much TV, it’s easy to forget what’s actively releasing new stuff!). Toss in a few hidden gems for good measure (late-night highlights, viral sensations, or a random TV reference with a bit of extra meaning) and I hope you’ll find at least a few suggestions to your liking.

So let’s get started. This month, “Bob’s Burgers” kept cooking after its 300th episode, a former Sundance TV premiere actually found a streaming home, and — first up! — Tim Robinson began his reign over HBO. Long may he sit.
