This article was amended on October 17, 2024, to avoid any ambiguity that a reference that the late Pat Finucane’s exact relationship with the IRA has yet to be clarified was a reference to what the British state position could be in an inquiry, not a statement of fact to that effect. Previous independent public inquiries, including one conducted by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir John Stevens, have concluded that Pat Finucane was not a member of any terrorist organisation.
