343 Industries has announced the Halo Championship Series, an official eSports league for competitive Halo players.

The league, which will initially focus on Halo 2: Anniversary, is the joint effort of 343 Industries, Twitch, and ESL.

“Halo was one of the first console eSports titles to rise to popularity a decade ago,” Che Chou, Franchise Media Director at 343 Industries, said in the announcement. “With the HCS, we’re harnessing that passion and investing back into the community that’s still vibrant today. In addition, our partnerships with ESL and Twitch – both parties with years of invaluable expertise – will help us realize our vision of quality and equality for the HCS.”
The inaugural season of the Halo Championship Series will begin later this month and conclude in March 2015. Teams of four will compete in officially sanctioned events and tournaments to earn HCS points. At the end of the season, teams with the most points will be invited to compete at the HCS finals.

More details about the Halo Championship Series will be revealed at the Halo: The Master Chief Collection Launch Invitational tournament this weekend, November 8 and 9. 343 Industries will also be publishing the official HCS rulebook in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, be sure to check out IGN's ranking of every Halo map ever made.
